And how!

An utterly devastating and truthful movie.

I think the scene where they are taking the family photographs is one of the most poignant moments - so honest that it hurts to watch.

Mary is perfection. I have always wanted to hear more people compliment her on that performance.
Glad this film is appreciated.

I watched this film this year in Psychology and was just blown away at how REAL it felt. Every person in it was simply incredible.

AndyHardy-

You're so right. Notice how Beth is smiling througout the whole scene, when al she really wants to do is get away from Conrad.

I love the film and found every aspect of it to be pretty much perfect. There was not a weak performance in the entire film. MY favorite moment is Moore's face when you can see her decision to leave. It is incredibly moving and powerful. Had Sissy Spacek not delivered the performance of a career with Coal Miner's Daughter, Moore would have had the Oscar. Raging Bull was good, edgy and provocative, but it just didn't hold a candle to the emotional depth and power of Ordinary People. I even thought it wasn't as good as Coal Miner's Daughter as Best Picture, but the direction was certainly superior. But I do think that John Hurt was robbed of the Oscar for his performance in The Elephant Man.
