Oscars In Memoriam: Recent Deaths Put Extra Pressure on Academy — Page 2

I had not heard about Sarah Jones until reading the 'Variety' article. It seems, at first, like such a no-brainer--she must be included. But, just as obviously, there must be some reasonable time limit on the 'In Memorium' segment.
Personally, I think Sarah Jones should be included in the Emmys tribute instead. If you look at her IMDB she's mostly worked in TV and the people in attendance at the Emmys would appreciate it more IMO.

I heard from a quasi-insider Bette was doing "Over the Rainbow," but I'm not entirely sure how reliable that was.
I wouldn't bet confidently on it, but I did hear it ...

With them doing a tribute to the 75th Anniversary of Wizard of Oz that makes perfect sense

I respectfully and completely disagree. IMDB is notoriously faulty, and is, in fact, missing many of Sarah's film credits. She was working on a film when she was killed. I don't see why it has to be an either/or, anyway - and honestly, I don't understand the comment that the Emmys' audience would "appreciate it more". Sarah's death has had international impact at film sites everywhere - just check out the "Slates for Sarah" page.
She was a young woman cut down in the prime of life while working on a film. Not only is she deserving, but her inclusion on the higher-profile Oscars telecast will help raise awareness for accountability in film safety. Sarah's death was completely avoidable. Her crew was told that permits had been secured and that the tracks were safe after two trains had passed.
As we know now, neither statement was true. This sort of thing can never be allowed to happen again.

"Over the Rainbow" was played at a relative's memorial service and it is a fitting tribute song if that's what they're doing. (I think of it as being like heaven as cheesy as that sounds.)

Super excited about Bette Midler singing--but not so much if it's Over the Rainbow even if it's in tribute to Oz. Just have a recording (film or audio) of Judy doing it. She's all anyone thinks of anyway no matter who is singing it. And no one can do it better. But whatever the case, just so happy that Oz is being recognized!

Obviously since this is put to music, they have to time the visuals and the music. So that creates another problem in that if they include everyone, Bette would be singing 35 verses of Over The Rainbow.

LOL
She could sing it really, really slow ... then do an interpretive dance ... then do it in the original Cantonese.
Honestly, I don't know if this will happen or not. And personally, I'd just as soon she sang something else, but if she does do "Over the Rainbow," I'm sure she'll do it justice.
EDIT: Also, I'm not sure how I feel about celebrating the 75th anniversary of MGM's Wizard of Oz with clips of everyone who died in the past year.
It's a little too A.D.D. multitasking for me.

I am still thinking Bette might do the Obit and sing "Wind Beneath My Wings". And maybe for Wizard they might mention it and make reference to Liza, Lorna and Joey as they wave from the audience? They have done it like that before.

LOL at Dame for thinking Liza is going to accept just waving from the audience when it's about "Mama".
Don't you remember the Tony Awards in the 90s when Liza and Lorna sung a medley and one of the songs was "If Momma was married." Something wasn't quite right about those too singing "But Momma gets married and married and married and never gets carried away."

I don't know Gothie.. they might not want her speaking at all. Or maybe Lorna will speak on their behalf ( would actually love that.).

What do you mean "accept?" There's no award for Judy or them. I imagine they might come out and introduce a quick clip from the film. Everyone claps and thinks it's so cool that they all got together for this.
That's about it.

Nicely done. Nice touch that they used "Somewhere in Time" since its composer was one of the deceased artists honored. And no applause - during the showing of pictures, so they got rid of the "popularity" issue. But I still have to say that if it were up to me, Peter O'Toole should have been the final honoree of the segment.

At least they put a stop to the 'applause' during the segment.
I hate the 'popularity game' during it.
(and I think they should do it in chronological or alphabetical order... but, they never do).

I'm a little surprised that they went with Hoffman last, but considering Shirley Temple hasn't performed in decades, it does make a kind of sense.
I'm glad to see Sarah Jones was recognized. In a way, she actually got the final image, just after Bette's song and before the commercial break:

Nothing wrong with insiders, but quasies make me queasy.

Quasies make me quazie.
I'm wondering if he didn't overhear them discussing "Somewhere IN TIME" being used over the clips instead of "Somewhere OVER THE RAINBOW."
That's what comes from eavesdropping at production meetings (or after production meetings or around production meetings). It's also possible that he's just plain stupid.
I considered the source before I took his word for it.
