There is another thread for this, but mostly for females, so I wanted to make ones for males. I need to know what to stay away from(nothing important, just for show auditions.) So start listing them, if you could.
EVERY audition I go to some kiddo thinks he is so clever singing something from "The Last Five Years" since it was only off-broadway and they think no one will ever know about it, until 4 other boys come in with the exact same song selected and the exact same state of mind. Love the show and all, but stay away from it in the audition room.
These are songs that are major no-nos in my opinion:
Music Of The Night- It won't be the haunting melody that puts everyone to sleep.
Epiphany-Infact, AVOID STEPHEN SONDHEIM at all costs!
Bring Him Home-Les Mis should also be avoided, and it's a very difficult song in the first place. You must balance emotion and vocals.
Of course, there are many more. The thing about auditions are is that you have to do something NO ONE will expect, especially not from your vocal range. I'm a mezzo-soprano, but I'm going to my first college audition singing "Finer Things" from Jane Eyre. Which is an extremely demanding piece and isn't very popular because of it's level of difficulty. My advice is: Look beyond your vocal range, and you'll find songs that aren't overdone.
Just avoid songs that are performed by actors who are "popular" and "hip"
I can't think of any examples for males, but EVERYBODY seem to think that "Life of the Party" is a brilliant song to audition with, or how "Taylor, the Latte Boy" is so cute and perfect for an audition.
I would say "If I Can't Love Her" is overdone. However, I agree with IAMmyownMUSICAL. Sing your best piece and sing it well. That's your best bet. If you could have been amazing on "If I Can't Love Her" but chose to do something you're not as passionate about or something that doesn't quite fit in your range because it's less common, you'll regret it.
