No Atonement and no Sweeney Todd.
Hmm...
I think SICKO is a lock for a Best Documentary nod, yes.
I'm not surprised by SWEENEY or ATONEMENT being left out. SWEENEY doesn't really deserve the nod, and I'm not quite sure why ATONEMENT is being ignored by all of the guilds.
Maybe it's just me, munk, and I have yet to see ATONEMENT, but it looks like the ENGLISH PATIENT meets THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, which does NOT pique my interest. The other films are somewhat indie in their form and content, even MICHAEL CLAYTON has a 70s throwback feel...maybe they thought ATONEMENT old-fashioned filmmaking...It looks like something Jennifer Jones and Tyrone Power might have made for Fred Zinnemann.

I haven't seen Atonement, but every ad, every review makes me think it's A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE loaded with OSCAR WORTHY PERFORMANCES! On over 100 TOP TEN LISTS!
In other words, BORING!
This is too much ignoring from the guilds for "Atonement." But it's not looking good for the film! Maybe the buzz I'm hearing right now is too little, too late... or just too isolated.
As far as 11 out of 17 going onto win the Oscar, that's a little over 60 percent.
Not much better than most fan sites and office pools.

Atonement is Jennifer Jones and Tyrone Power but without the passion. The English Patient without the opera.
I felt it was all repression and no expression. Its good, but I can't understand why it is on anyone's shortlist.
However the biz we call show thinks it is top drawer, so what the fudge do I know.
SWEENEY doesn't really deserve the nod
Heh. Deserves it moreso than Juno, me thinks.
Well, as Besty said it's only a little over 60% and also, in the past three years, their choices do not mirror the Oscar's choice for best film.
