Pace class of 2011#1

Posted: 4/29/07 at 9:23pm

Anyone going to Pace University?
My son is going for a Theatre degree in Directing, but also is a great actor..
Is anyone here going for any of the Performance degrees?
(MT, Acting, etc)
We live in the Seattle area so moving to NYC is a HUGE move for him. But he is so excited...
I will hand over this "center or back" sign on to him as soon as he has time to actually look at his computer, his show opens this week and so is swamped with work...

I'm going to Pace in the fall with an undeclared major in the Honors College, but I'm probably going to audition for either MT or Acting within the year. I would have auditioned for the program this year, but to make a long story short, I had originally planned on majoring in vocal performance at some other college, and I couldn't get a whole other audition rep ready in time.

he is graduating from Kamiak! He has a lot of friends that go to Roosevelt right now (and in the past). Ruben is a great teacher, and is a good friend of Kamiak. He and my sons' drama teacher are on the board of ITS, so work a lot together. I will refer this thread to my son, i hope he responds soon

Oh great! I graduated from Roosevelt last year, so I've probably seen him at Thespian Conferences and whatnot, and it sounds like we might have some mutual friends. I agree about Ruben, he's a fantastic teacher and person...Anyway, tell your son congrats on Pace, I guess, from a random stranger whom he may or may not know, heh.

haha, they're really good and into their publicity to juniors and early seniors lol. I remember getting a million things in the mail and email from them last year.

Are you interested in musical theatre? I can go on and on about it obviously because I'm going but because I have a friend who's a freshman MT and has told me a lot about it.

I am superbly happy with Pace's Musical Theater dept. We have amazing teachers and superb talent here. It's truly amazing to go to my musical theater classes. I will be a junior here next year, and I'm really happy with the program.

If anyone has any specific questions, you can ask me. There are a few other Pace students here on the board, who I'm sure would only tell you great things about the department, as well.

I'm going for Musical Theatre, yes!

I would love to hear about the curriculum, and individual attention. Also, how are internships?

i am going to PACE next year for BA in theater arts (focus on acting) but i am interested in directing also which is the reasoning for no bfa in acting! =] i have a lot of directing on my resume anyway.. i have heard nothing but great things about it because my sisters roommate is a new york reporter for the theater scene and he said pace's acting and theater program is very up and coming! i dont know if that helps you, but it certainly helped me re: Pace class of 2011

How is Pace's MT program? I've heard that it is new this year.

I'm not an MT at Pace yet, but I'll be going there in the fall so I'm pretty educated on the program.

From what I've heard from current students the program is very hands-on with a lot of involvement in the industry. The professors have a lot of connections and the students have such unlimited resources with a lot of individual attention since the program is small (20 kids are accepted with a goal of a 16 person entering freshman class). They have a senior showcase for the BFA Acting and the BFA MT's- I believe this year is their first one. The head of the program, Amy Rogers, is amazing and chooses only a small number of people for the program solely because she wants to give personal attention to all of the MT's. While the requirement for dance is only twice a week, the intense dancers take advantage of Steps and BDC and are more than happy with it. Supposedly they just built new dance studios in the building because they used to send their MT's to BDC, but now it's on campus- in brand new studios. From the shows I've seen, the talent is amazing with incredible people and a really wide variety of types. The interest in the program has increased a lot- supposedly it doubled from last year's 200 applicants to 400 this year (for MT), making it a 5% acceptance rate so it's gotten very competitive as well.

The link above is to an interview with Amy Rogers, the head of our MT department at Pace. She covers a vast amount of information in this interview, which I believe will help to answer most of your questions- at least the ones regarding the MT dept. If you have further detailed questions, send me a private message and I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible.

p.s.- as MT majors we have huge perks. there are tons of connections to the theater world within the city. this week alone kelli o'hara came to speak to one of the dance classes (today actually), Amy Rogers was featured in concert at our Michael Schimmel Theater, we have a master class with musical orchestrator Mary Mitchell Campbell (of Company), and we have a special guest come into the sophomore Musical Theater Technique class for every one of our three/four finals for the class. The department continues to expand and I find that I am learning great things and am gaining valuable experience from the masters in this field.
