I only heard of her from the Tommy Tune autobiography. When Tune was Tony nominated for SEESAW, Michael Bennett strongly advised him to get a female date for the awards ceremony. "I don't care if you get PAT AST - just get a woman!" Tune ignored the advice and took his boyfriend. When they announced the nominees, the TV network wouldn't show him sitting in his seat nezt toa man. When he won, they didn't show him until he was walking down the aisle.
When I read this, I asked myself, "Who the hell is PAT AST?"
Rent HEAT. You will bust! LOL.
She originated the role of The Matron in Tom Eyen/Ron Link's hilarious WOMEN BEHIND BARS in 1974. (Devine succeeded here in the role in 1976.) She played the same type role in the movie "Reform School Girls".
Great in HEAT!
Trivia:
Was a receptionist and clerk in a box factory when she met Andy Warhol and starred in some of his films. Her roles led to meeting the designer Halston at a party, and she was a model in his Madison Avenue store, although she weighed over 200 lbs.
Friend of Andy Warhol.
Her father was a comic who performed in the Catskills.
She met Halston at a party in New York, which led to a friendship, a job in his store on Madison Avenue, and a job as one of his models (in spite of the fact she weighed 210 pounds).
Pat attended Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, New York. She and Barbra Streisand were classmates, graduating the same year.
Pat's beloved canine companion was an Australian Shepard named Winnie.
Hired for the Broadway musical "Nine", but was fired by Tommy Tune after 3 months for "trying to take over the show".
Was a good friend of the late Berry Berenson who died in the 9-11 tragedy. Berenson was planning Ast's 60th birthday party, which, sadly, neither would live to see.
Played a mean school teacher in Motley Crue's video "Smokin' In the Boys Room" which was similar to her character Edna in Reform School Girls (1986)
Wow, thanks Addy.
Pat was an amazing character (especially in HEAT).
I knew some people in Portland, OR who knew her.
One New Year's Eve, they surprised me with a telephone call to her.
I asked her to say one of her lines from HEAT and she did but she obviously had not watched the film as many times as I did. She didn't say the line the same way any more.
Would she have been Saragena in NINE?
If it's not enough that I spoke with Pat Ast on the phone, I also went swimming in Berry Berenson's swimming pool. A friend of mine was taking care of her house while she was away. This was many years before the tragedy. I only met her once. It was at Limelight in NYC. She was having a party with a showing of her photography.
Any more pics of Pat, morosco?
I've quoted her in HEAT for years, when she says "I don't care, 'cause like I said ... I'll throw YOU and your KIDS outta here!" Thanks, Glebb; I almost forgot about her.
OMG Auggie! Nothing better than a conversation where I can fit in one of her lines.
"You and your girlfriend and your baby are gettin out!"
"8:05, out."
"What do you mean what do I mean? You're a big girl."
There was a plan for a film version of Low Life In High Heels a long time ago. Madonna supposedly had the rights. I was to audition for the role of Pat! lol.
Netflix "Reform School Girls," it is a camp delight.
And Pat Ast is one of the main reasons why.
