I remember as I watched it thinking somebody was giving those kids the questions to ask, because they were perfect. They didn't seem memorized, though.
A weird factoid about that show. The furry chested host used to run into the audience during the closing credits and kiss the girls on the lips. It was very Xuxa.

To understand just how remarkable it was for Patti to sing that song, of all songs, you have to understand the sublimely tacky grand hokiness of the the Joel Brooks movie the song is from. Here is Didi Conn, lip-synching to the vocal by Kacey Cusak.

Some guy I know might have paid money to see that in the theater.
And he might have loved the fact that Didi's scratchy speaking voice turned so rich when singing. Like a Lady Gomer Pyle.

Funny this song is being brought up. It's composer was recently found dead in his Upper East Side apartment. It was an apparent suicide. He was awaiting trial on some very serious rape charges.

Singer Debby Boone spoke out Monday about the suicide of songwriter Joseph Brooks, asking fans to separate the rape charges he went to his grave with from the hit song that launched her career.
"My only real association with Joe was in 1977 for a couple of hours in a New York recording studio when I recorded his beautiful song, 'You Light Up My Life,'" she said in a statement to The Daily News.
"That recording ...has meant so much to so many people. I will continue to sing it proudly and hope that people will be able to separate the song from Joe's severely troubled life."

The woman speaking Spanish in his video is his ex-wife and former Miss Universe Cecilia Bolocco who is a gold-digger extraordinaire. I remember watching the pageant in 1987 when she won and am still shaking my head at the outcome. To me she was the worst semi-finalist on several levels. Someone prepared a pageant montage of her at the link. She eventually discovered Clairol and was repackaged for the wealthy-husband-hunt.
