Okay, my Mother has put on a little weight due to a medical condition. Not a lot of weight, but she's clearly not the rail she once was. I could care less if my Mom was 100 lbs or 500 lbs, but she just won't shut up about it. "I'm fat this, I'm fat that. My fingers are fat. My ass is fat. I'm fat!"
Now I love the woman, but I don't know how many times I can tell her she's not fat. It seems like she's saying it just so I'll say she's not fat. But it's getting so tiresome.
Any good solutions to calming someones irrational comments?

My standard response:
"I hear jogging a few times a week will take care of that for you."
When you don't give them the response they expect ("You are so not fat, you look fabulous!"), they quickly shut up about it.
Suzanne: I never use catalogs. I'd rather go in the store and see all the salespeople groveling and sucking up to you.
Julia: Pardon me, I never knew they were so solicitous at the K-Mart.

My mother used to be the exact same way...for YEARS I had to listen to it. "God, could I GET any fatter?" "*dramatic sigh* I remember when these jeans used to actually FIT!"
I just told her one day that if she was so damn fat and hated herself so much, the way I saw it, she had two options: Either kill herself and put us *all* out of our misery, or stop eating so much damn ice cream, put on a pair of sneakers, and go freaking work it off.
Haven't heard it since.
However, since your mom's weight gain is due to a medical condition, perhaps you should point out that it's not like she's your average run-of-the-mill lardass, and it's not entirely her fault, it's her medical condition, and since she *does* have a medical problem, it would perhaps be in her best interests all-around to maybe try to eat healthier and do as much exercise as she can comfortably do? Certainly can't hurt...
