What an incredibly euphoric experience at the movies!
I feel like I had the reaction to Pina that many seem to have had to The Artist this season. Visually stunning and with a killer soundtrack this absolutely must, must be seen.
The 3D is tasteful and used only when appropriate.
This will delight any lover of film, dance, theater and/or life. :)

It really is a great film. The 3D is used to simulate the depth of the stage, which is an essential element to Pina's choreography. She was not afraid of putting dancers all the way against the back wall as an integral part of her work.
The dancing is fantastic and the conceit--her dance troupe paying tribute to her iconic choreography and the impact she had on their personal and professional development--is strong for a performance documentary. The 3D is never gimmicky. It just brings it to life. The opening focus on Pina's The Rite of Spring is more than worth the price of admission.

The Rite of Spring section was spellbinding. Truly.
I had never heard of Pina before this film and just want to see more and more. They need to put together a version of her works for Broadway. Does her troupe come to New York often/ever?
Slight Spoiler-
I loved that they conducted the interviews through voice over and just let the dancers stare into the camera. It was beautiful and sad, like much of her work.

My company released Pina in the UK last year and it truly is amazing. I have a few friends in the states who were peeved that they had to wait so long for it to be releasing over there.
The Tanztheater Wuppertal ensemble will be performing in the UK as part of a series of cultured olympiad events in the summer, but I've not heard if they will be performing in the US.
However, if the film wins the Oscar in a couple of weeks that could all change.

I would like to know too. This DVD release needs director commentary and about 25 hrs of cut/bonus scenes, ha.
Paulyd- have you ever seen them perform live? The section they did during the credits would have been so thrilling live so they slowly crept downstage.
Honestly when I walked out of the movie last night and walked down into the West 4th stop I half expected everyone to be walking at an angle down those corridors onto the platform, and then who knows what would be in store for me on the train! I love that dance was brought to life in the real world. You hear people say, "dance is my life," but for these dancers it literally is the world they live in.
I liked the interview with the daughter of the two company members and how she said she hasn't known anything else in her whole life. I bet she has the most interesting world view of all.

I heard he shot MANY hours that didn't make it to the cut, so maybe the DVD will include a lot. Can' wait to see it.

I saw them perform Cafe Muller a few years ago at Saddlers Wells in London and it was amazing, so I was so excited when we bought the UK rights to the film.
So many of my friends arent usually fans of her work, but after seeing the film they've left the cinema spellbounded
The only extra we have on our DVD release is an interview with Wenders that we shot ourselves. I believe the french and german releases have lots of extra features

Posted: 2/4/12 at 10:48amWhizzer I started a thread on this movie a while back as well because I loved it so very much. 3d is a marvelous technique for dance and I the Rites of Spring scenes were, I was searching for the word but you've hit on it with spellbinding. I also loved hearing the dancers in so many languages and from so many backgrounds. So glad this movie has been honored with an oscar and bafta nods.
