Thanks, dMama and Jane, for the responses. I think you're right that no reason or a white lie are the best courses. I don't want a couple to feel they have to invite an extra person they maybe can't afford just to be politically correct. (I'm talking about co-workers here, not close friends or relatives, obviously.)
