A homosexual is just someone who is in love with another person of the same sex.
A polygamist is someone who can't keep their **** in their pants so they have to have more than one "wife" to screw, oh I mean love.

chita, if this is a serious question......one main difference is many polygamists keep their wives and families under lock and key, virtually as slaves...(no to be confused with the small segment of society who enter into a master-slave relationship with mutual consent).
Many polygamists throughout history have married or "diddled" their own children.
If my religious believe was to bite the heads off of live chickens and spit them at children, should that be legal just because it's a religious belief? Of course not.
So I'll answer no, no, no......
but I could care less how many wives someone has as long Aas I do not have to pay taxes to support them.

I guess the question for me is, is polygamy limited to what we know of it re: fundamental Mormonism (subjagation of women, etc.), or can it simply mean any type of plural relationship, whether it's between a man and several women, a woman and several men, or several men and several women.
If it's the latter, I don't really have a problem with people choosing to live in a plural relationship that's based on mutual respect in which all parties are at least deemed equal. I actually know a gay couple that expanded their relationship to include someone else. I wouldn't make that choice (my hands are already full), but who am I to say someone else can't.
I think, however, there is a strong legal reasoning for keeping relationships between two people. Say I had three spouses. And I end up on life support and can't make any decisions about my medical treatment. There could be a nasty and prolonged fight between the spouses who may disagree on treatment. And say I died without a will. How does one split up an estate amongst several spouses?

elphaba-
I was not clear with "Can we discriminate or deny civil rights to a group of people based on religious beliefs."
What I meant was can you, on the basis of religious teachings, discriminate against certain groups.
example: the bible says adultery is a sin. can we create a civil law to punish spouses who cheat?

actually to me it wasn't I was unsure if it was satire.
And as polygamy is outlawed by the Morman church, can it be called a religious belief?
I mean they used to sacrifice people to the Gods in other religions, if I start doing that can I claim it's ok due to religious beliefs?
You do bring up a good point, as there are many "more than two partner" male relationships.
If one day we are allowed to marry, think of the controversy with that..........only two could marry, would the third be pissed off?

This is why law should not be based on religious beliefs. It should be based on inherent civil rights and consent issues. In this context, there is no valid argument against gay marriage. There is no valid argument against polyamory (a term I will use to counter polygamy's "slave" connotation, which I feel would be wrong).
When people try to compare homosexuality with bestiality and pedophilia, this is the simple answer. The latter two betray consent and civil rights. No need to argue issues of decency or morality.

Posted: 6/9/06 at 1:20pmI'm threadjacking here but jrby just made me think of something. Why is prostitution illegal? Yes, traditionally prostitution has exploited women but what if a woman/man wants to sell their body? Why is that illegal? She/He is an adult and so is the potential client. It's her/his body.

#17re: Polygamy
Posted: 6/9/06 at 1:37pmI agree that prostitution and marijuana should be legal. It's never going to stop. Why not regulate it? Tax it? Reduce crime and prison issues? Make both safer?

Misconceptions. For some reason the powers at be would rather it not be legal. Look at the BS FDA ruling on medicinal marijuana!
It's thanks to Nancy Reagan era "Just Say No" and BS "morality" that will keep both of these issues illegal for some time. The public has been brainwashed on the matter.

Posted: 6/9/06 at 4:14pmI have to agree. I'm not a marijuana user, but I have tried it, just doesen't appeal to me. But if I have the right to go to Martunis after work today and get loaded on double martinis while listening to a piano player sing showtunes (Wow I'm really gay, someone else should have the right to light up and smoke out. As long as it doesen't infringe on my rights to clean air, I don't care.
