Pope Francis is The Advocate's 'Person Of The Year.' Really? — Page 2

Wasn't there that scene in Milk where James Franco skinny-dipped in the pool of the publishers of The Advocate and peed in it? I mentally went to that scene upon seeing that cover.

Until this Pope officially canonizes fellow Argentinean Evita, I gotta side with many of the posts here.

Did you actually read the link I posted? You're mistaken on this one. For THE ADVOCATE, it's being singularly influential in the LGBT affairs of the world. So I would completely disagree with the notion that he "certainly qualifies."

henrik, how much can (or should) a “step” mean if it effects no practical changes in the Church or its doctrine? If a “step” is merely symbolic, merely rhetoric – as, in my opinion, this Pope’s “steps” have been – it can all be undone in the blink of an eye. Just look at how wildly the tone swung from Ratzinger to Francis. What if the Pope were to die tomorrow and get replaced by another Ratzinger – or someone worse?

Without any practical effects, all “The Advocate” is recognizing here is P.R., and that’s a soulless, conscience-less thing to do, especially in a year with Edie Windsor in the offing.

Namo was spot-on when he wrote “Soooo soooo grateful for crumbs.” That may have been passable once upon a time, but with the whole cookie in sight, crumbs are only going to keep us on the ground.

(I’m also shooting for Worst Metaphor of the Day; around here, there’s usually stiff competition for that award.)

Sure, we should note that Francis has made some relatively supportive statements toward gays this year, but to make Francis the person of the year for the LGBT community, when so many others have worked tirelessly to advance equality, is silly and seems like a PR move by the Advocate to get attention. Bravo for them, they got it. How it advances LGBT rights and upholds our credibility when we give out honors so lightly, however, is another matter.
