Pope Francis is The Advocate's 'Person Of The Year.' Really?

I mean, really? Come on now.



"The most influential person of 2013 doesn't come from our ongoing legal conflict but instead from our spiritual one — successes from which are harder to define. There has not been any vote cast or ruling issued, and still a significant and unprecedented shift took place this year in how LGBT people are considered by one of the world's largest faith communities.

Pope Francis is leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics all over the world. There are three times as many Catholics in the world than there are citizens in the United States. Like it or not, what he says makes a difference. Sure, we all know Catholics who fudge on the religion's rules about morality. There's a lot of disagreement, about the role of women, about contraception, and more. But none of that should lead us to underestimate any pope's capacity for persuading hearts and minds in opening to LGBT people, and not only in the U.S. but globally."

I mean...I appreciate the change in tone from this Pope. But for a gay magazine to not award Edie Windsor 'Person of the Year' is kind of disgusting.

Idiotic in the extreme. The Pope is still the leader of the most prominent anti-gay hate group in the world, and people are too willing to ignore past and present bigotry thanks to Pope Sunshine slightly toning down the extremity of the language.

There goes my subscription to The Advocate.

Surely THE ADVOCATE knew what a controversial decision this might be. I wonder how bad the backlash will get.

Ain't that the truth. But not from me.

Edie Windsor is the woman who brought the case against DOMA, which ended up bringing federal recognition to marriages between same-sex couples. I'd say that is far more impactful than 'Let's stop focusing on the sin of the gay.'

She was also Time's runner up to their person of the year. There is an excellent profile on her in the issue.

A-hole moves are in the DNA of The Advocate and have been from the very beginning. Remember the publisher telling Harvey Milk it wasn't the right time for him to run for SF city supervisor in "Milk"? That was all real.

In the '80s, when the first straight celebrity said something that wasn't actively mean about gay people, he went on the cover. And it's been that way ever since. Soooo soooo grateful for crumbs. The magazine is the living embodiment of Jon Lovitz's Harvey Fierstein spoof: "We know you're not gay, but if you were gay, do you think you'd go out with me?"
