Gotcha, SNAFU. I had not heard the Mithras story before. I knew that the whole deal with Christmas being in December was an attempt to counter the 'pagan' celebration, just like Easter and Mardi Gras/Carnival.

Not really related to the nativity scene but some of the comments reminded me about how I once tried to tell my brother that I thought the Adam and Eve story was an allegory made up by someone and he was horrified that I didn't believe Adam and Eve actually existed.

I was surprised the Pope even brought it up. I mean, if the church has been wrong about this ALL of these years, what else have they been wrong about?
