Gotcha, SNAFU. I had not heard the Mithras story before. I knew that the whole deal with Christmas being in December was an attempt to counter the 'pagan' celebration, just like Easter and Mardi Gras/Carnival.

And the shepherds didn't bring their flocks with their gifts? And the wise men from the East also walked hundreds of miles to see the baby in the manger?

Not really related to the nativity scene but some of the comments reminded me about how I once tried to tell my brother that I thought the Adam and Eve story was an allegory made up by someone and he was horrified that I didn't believe Adam and Eve actually existed.
