So this young woman (18 I think) was in a horrible auto accident.
It made news b/c she had some problems and was using cocaine at the time of her accident.
She crashed into median and slammed into a concrete wall at 100mph.
Now, the police officers have leaked several photos of the crime scene. They are beyond horrible. In fact, I'm not even going to link them here, but they are easy to find with google.
The police say they intended to show them to friends and family as a warning of driving on drugs.
But now everyone can see them and the family has to deal with this.
So, my question is: should someone be held accountable for the leak? If someone happened by with a cell phone they could have done the same thing. It's not illegal (I don't think).
But beyond breaking police procedure (which they obviously did) should these police be punished for a moral lapse in judgment?
Or is it acceptable to post photos of horrific events in the public domain?
Curious as to your thoughts.

Posted: 5/6/09 at 12:32pmScare tactics don't work. Whoever leaked the photos should be suspended.

Posted: 5/6/09 at 12:36pmwhether the tactics work or not is moot. they broke procedure and must face the consequences of those actions. if they feel strongly about what they did, they should be willing to face the consequences.

Posted: 5/6/09 at 12:38pmUnfortunately there have been plenty of people in car accidents due to drugs or alcohol and people are aware of the consequences. The police are a little dense to think that leaking pictures from this particular accident will do anything besides give the girl's family something else to stress about. They broke procedure, so they should be punished.

dayum, them's sum raunchy ass pics. girl just destroyed that car.
after looking into it, it seems unclear whether there was a procedure in place which prevented them from sharing the photos.

yes, the car was totaled, but it's the picture of the girl that is so unnerving.

Here's a link to CNN's coverage. It shows the car.
The pics that I'm not linking are truly upsetting. Posting those pics is a little tasteless, even for me (and as you all know, that's saying sometihng).

A couple of the sites I tried are blocked here at work. I figure I don't need to see them. Especially if you say they're bad.
When I saw the pic of the car, I remembered seeing the family on Dateline or 20/20 a year or so ago.

anyone who wants to find them can. no need to add bww to the number of places the family's internet cleaner visits to demand that the photos be taken down.
but really, those put the blood on the highway tapes to shame.

If the police did something wrong according to the procedures with releasing photos and whatnot, then they should be held accountable.
When an organization does something wrong it is always worse than an individual not connected to something.

I just saw the pictures...her head is like completely smashed.
I think when there is something like this and the person is injured or dies and they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol, we kind of feel something like "Well, they deserved it, they did it to themselves, ect.". Whether or not this is right, I think that most people feel like this.
If there were another car involved and they were not under the influence, we will always feel for them...as we should (I guess) if they are innocent.

I saw the photos. I believe it was poor judgement on the police officer's part to distribute them. IF there were policies in place to prevent this and the officers acted against them, then prosecute their asses! If they did not break a policy, then California had better work quickly to get some sort of laws in place to prevent this from happening again.
There will be some heavy lawsuits because of this. I am sure the family will compensated well for the pain and suffering the release of these graphic photos caused!

I looked at the photos. It's no worse than what happens daily in war or terrorism, except that war and terrorism are worse, they are intentional.
Given the accident, the girl was "lucky". She died instantly. Not all do.
Police were stupid to release these photos. Will that do more to stop auto accidents than war and terrorism photos will stop wars and terrorism?

Posted: 5/7/09 at 2:32pmactually it's been alleged that this was suicide and thus intentional.
