Power Napping- is it safe?

I just realized that I do it (I never knew it had a name) and then I heard it's unhealthy. Does anyone know anything about this?

Never power-nap while driving.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

Now, what exactly is "Power Napping"? How is it different than regular napping?

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

It supposed to be a very brief (like 10-30 minute) crash nap.

I don't think it's safe, but it should help keep you awake.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

power napping is napping with the full intent of only being asleep long enough to rejuvenate your "livelyhood". In other words, sleeping long enough to wake you up. As we know, during sleep most of your bodily systems shut down temporarily due to not being used. According to some doctors (ones I've asked about it) power-napping causes those systems to shut down even though you don't have the intent of staying asleep long enough to need them to. Which confuses them and could possibly cause them to not function properly upon your waking.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

Really? So that's why... but I feel fine after ten minutes of closing my eyes.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

That's ridiculous. I dare any of you to wake me up after I've been asleep for only 10 minutes than we'll talk about dangerous.

I agree with Matt_G, I don't believe in power napping. I generally nap for 2 hours when I get home from campus before I do anything else.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

and this is the reason I don't nap at all.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

I get like five/five and a half hours of sleep at night and then I crash sometime during the afternoon. I close my eyes and I'm out, sort of, for ten minutes and then I'm fine.

So that's not ok? I'm lost.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

Oh, it's okay. My mom has done that since she was in high school. My friend Megan does it every day too, actually most people I know do. I've never heard that was bad.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

Years ago when I was in the Navy I was in school to operate nuclear reactors. It was an impossibally hard academic schedule. I usually only got 3 to 4 hours of sleep a day.

Back then, when we had a break, I would 'power nap' for ten minutes, but that was due to sleep deprivation and extreme caffeine addiction, so it was not good.

God, I used to be a caffiene freak. We would crush no-doze and snort it. NOT reccomended!

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

ok...power-napping, not recommended. That's all I can say.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

It probably isn't good to do OFTEN... I've definitely taken up the practice since starting college, though. If I'm nodding off in one class and ten minutes is all I've got til the next one, sleeping make me feel awake again.

thankfully, a bunch of high up Navy guys caught hell over the way that school is run a number of years ago and it has changed a lot.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

bts...you can say it's fine. the doctors tend to disagree. *shrugs*

I don't suppose it's life threatening, so continue to do it if you must. re: Power Napping- is it safe?

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

It's fine in that it's effective. You'll feel more alert, etc.

Is it *healthy*? Well, no.

It's a matter of priorities.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

Doctors can say it isn't all they want, I don't power nap, I long term 2 hour nap. If I didn't I'd never make it through a day on the amount of sleep I'd otherwise be able to get.
