re: Power Napping- is it safe?

Oh, don't worry it's fine.

Although I will admit I have taken what I call an "involuntary power nap" once or twice in my NY History class. It just happens to be that my professor is 8 * infinity years old and doesn't notice it.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

You know what's the WORST?!

When you're about to fall asleep (either intentionally or unintentionally), and all of a sudden your arm or your leg does this fierce twitch! Does this happen to anyone else? Why does it occur?

Actually that doesn't happen to me...but sometimes right before I fall asleep my leg/hand/arm...whatever, falls asleep instead. Then the tingling sensation keeps me awake.

What do doctors know? They don't want you to take a nap so that your body will fall apart and you will be dependent on them.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

You really need to know your own body's signals. If you are tired most of the time...you're doing something unbalanced to your body and it reacts.

We all get fatigued for different reasons at differnt times of the day or week. Stress causes weakness. Sleep or good rest releives stress. Depression is a whole different monster.

I sleep like a log every night. But on some occassions when I'm doing way too much for too long...my body starts to shut down mentally or physically. That's when I'll make room for a power nap or rest in a dark quiet room for 30 min. My doctor think's it's healthy for me personally. And I feel great after a power nap!

Key is..know your body signals and don't push too much for too long and you'll stay healthy.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

I've never understood power naps. It takes me more than 10 minutes just to fall asleep - how do people "decide" on a moment's notice to fall asleep for 10 minutes??

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

Rath it takes me at least a half an hour to fall asleep thats why power naps don't work for me so if I do nap I have to have like a 2 hour block of time.

Tiff, I have that happen to me! I always thought it was just my body being really weird!

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

I think a better time frame for a short nap is half an hour to an hour. Especially because nothing short of complete and total exhaustion is going to make me fall asleep in less than 15 minutes.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

Rath~ then maybe you would do better with a 15- 30 min. rest. Just go into a comfortable space in a dark room with no intruptions and close you eyes. I know, I know it sound hokey..."but find your happy thoughts" and relax. Not everyone can drop into a coma in 10 min. and wake up ready to boogy.

Learn for babies...when they're tired they sleep...no matter when and where. They don't have to think about. What's that tell you? We're meant to rest.

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

tiff, I know what you mean about the twitching too! I fell asleep in class yesterday and the day before. oops...and I was reallly trying to stay awake but it felt like there were five pound weights on my eyelids. SO I just kept dozing off and then I would twitch and wake up again! and then I would try look down at my book and go to sleep and no one would notice...lol.
Ways to annoy people: Arrive at a meeting late, say you're sorry, but you didn't have time for lunch, and you're going to be nibbling during the meeting. Then eat raw potatoes. Ask people what gender they are,or Disagree strongly with everything anybody says:)

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

I take about two hours to fall asleep normally, Rath, but my little ten minute things are when I'm about to pass out anyway so I really don't have a choice. It's like I just shut down for ten minutes and then I'm ok. But I still haven't heard- what exactly am I doing to myself that's so harmful? How bad is this?

Is it better if you do the 30-minute rest thing and not actually fall asleep?

re: Power Napping- is it safe?

I'm no expert...but have looked into this whole sleep dis function thingee because of friends and family members who suffer from it. I went to a few classes and here is the jist of what they were endorsing.

1. taking more than an hour to fall asleep on too many occassions is not normal unless you are ill or experiences a heavy stress load. If this lasts, you should seek medical help.

2. "shutting down" in the middle of the day is a sign of extreme exhaustion and you need to pace yourself so that this does not happen too often. It can be damaging and affect your immune and nervous system.

3. waking up several times during the night is equally damaging and you need to again find out the cause and treat it.

There are several things you can do to balance your sleep and awake time so that you can operate at peak level and sleep restfully for at least 6-8 hrs. each night.

I won't bore y'all here, but trust me their are several solutions to all of this. Each person suffers for a different reason. You need to find your "source of sleeplessness".

These courses helped my friend and people I care about very much.
A good night's sleep is worth it's weight in gold!

Sweet Dreams!
