W -- the Life President/the Death Governor

I just find it so frustrating when people rally around a cause that won't actually do anyone any good...like saving someone who doesn't have the ability to ever know she is alive... when the funding, lobbying, and publicity could be poured into something that has a chance of making a difference in someone's life. Things like AIDS research or organ donation. But unless something sells newspapers or will win votes, it is neither a front page story nor will you see George cutting short his vacation to lend his support.

wow, sorry for your loss iflit......and you are so right about organ donations.
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956

dear auggie27,

i don't who u are, guy or girl, gay or straight, but i just wanted u to know that i think i love u! :)

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson

Iflit, the problem there is the people with this money found a rallying cause. They are against AIDS research because, clearly, anyone who gets AIDS (druggies, fags) deserves it. Nevermind the fastest-growing segment of the AIDS population is black women (wait, they deserve it, too, because they're female and black), it's a disease created by God to wipe this evil spreading off the face of the earth (our blessed dying Pope called gays an evil spreading over the earth in his book a few years ago).
I also know, having come from a fundamentalist Christian home, that there's a limit to what people will allow in science and religion. Strangely enough, a LOT of people have severe issues with organ donations and the like. They don't believe it's right. Of course, when science is "suddenly" on their side, they'll do everything they can to say it's the Christian thing to do (i.e. extending the life indefinitely of a woman who is no longer present in her own body).

As our founding fathers (many of whom were not traditional Christians, despite the fundamentalist attempts to prove otherwise...read their writings, they were Universalists by a vast majority) so desperately tried to create in our Constitution, there is a strong need to prevent ANY religion from having such a powerful foothold in the application of government policy as the radical right currently has.

Terri's gone; AIDS is here to stay

Excellent points, Bwaysinger. The hypocrisy toward science and medicine is everywhere. And by the way -- does anyone notice that the Pope is opting to remain in his quarters, and not rush back to the hospital, where life-saving support might keep him going? Perhaps the world's foremost spiritual leader simply wants what the demonized husband of a certain recently-passed woman wants: dignity in his death.

And by the way, does anyone know which community had one of the fastest growing rate of HIV infection n the 90s? Straight people over 55-60. Yep. Seniors. Though it sounds like a Leno monologue, it's a huge problem in retirement communities. The mindset has always been, HIV doesn't happen to "nice" (white, straight, hard-working, non-druggie, non-African) people. This epidemic has been approached from the start as an opportunity to demonize "lifestyle" rather than a bug that is threatening to wipe out the world. And now that we live in a society that deals with abstinance as the ONLY solution to all issues of sexuality (teen pregnancy, AIDS, garden variety STD, acne) -- from the President on down -- we're still sticking our heads in the sand.

As some of you know, I work in the field of organ transplantation. (The 16 year old, I mentioned earlier, who died waiting for new lungs was a family friend and was totally unrelated to my work.) One phenomenon that I have observed repeatedly is that the very same people who "don't believe in organ donation" are often are the most righteously indignant when the need for a new heart, liver, kidney or lung suddenly becomes personal...and one isn't available. I always find it incredible when people are unwilling to donate organs but EXPECT one to be there for them when they need it.

I guess it's common to the human experience that most of our beliefs are subject to alteration based on person experience, but it still makes me crazy.

It's the exclusive mindset of the overprivileged, Iflit. Remember Nancy Reagan's turnaround on Republican rhetoric regarding stem-cell research once it was revealed that the research could have led to a cure for Alzheimer's for her beloved husband?
It's so easy to stand up and scream about values and morals (full of sound and fury, signifying nothing should really be the Democrats' slogan about this administration) when you have "moral high ground" to stand on without the benefit of personal experience.
I guarantee you Dubya and the First Lady would have different opinions on abortion if one of their daughters had gotten pregnant in high school.
And come on, this may be off-the-mark conjecture, but look at them and the way they've lived their lives and tell me Barbara and Jenna did take advantage of contraception and protection during high school and/or college.
Hypocrasy will always find a way to come forward.
