Alright this is highly pissing me off.
This is basically the antithesis of blindly-devoted Christians who try to force their beliefs on others: Pretentious Atheistic "philosophy" buffs who try to push their beliefs on you. The type who have taken their entire philosophy of life from Donnie Darko but have no idea what they're talking about. Yet they want to debate with everyone at every point of every day (Especially Christians) to prove how "smart" they are.
Not cool. Has anyone else run into this?

Donnie Darko actually has a good solid basis in existentialism.... Granted, watching the movie doesn't make you an expert on anything, but it's not completely worth writing off. There's a lot more to it than 'troubled kid saves the world'.
Edited to add that existentialism is a real, bona fide, google-able style of thinking and not something that a random know-it-all made up.

I have no idea what *any* philosophy buffs are talking about, pretentious or not.

Cruel, aren't you just as guilty of the the same behavior by virtue of starting this thread?
Now, I have not met the "type who have taken their entire philosophy of life from Donnie Darko but have no idea what they're talking about. Yet they want to debate with everyone at every point of every day (Especially Christians) to prove how "smart" they are."
But, you are basically stating that there is no value to their beliefs because you find them not to be worthy of serious thought or consideration (or not original). You are thus imposing your own values onto them and assuming that your perspective has more validity.
Isn't the very nature of your criticism therefore pretentious?

Posted: 4/18/06 at 12:31amI'm not writing it off and I'm not denying its existential bent, I was talking about the type of people who ONLY watch Donnie Darko or ONLY watch I Heart Huckabees or ONLY watch Waking Life and believe that they're suddenly Duke of Metaphysics.

Posted: 4/18/06 at 12:33amAhh but it's not, good sir. I'm not saying that my way is the "right way". I was merely criticizing these people for believing that they are experts when they've only seen one movie, and especially when their philosophies are flawed.

Maybe the movie somehow touched a nerve in them and was their truth. Sometimes when something speaks to you, it is your truth.
I dunno. Even if annoying, I find it at least refreshing when people have some view on life that is not a cookie cutter opinion formed out of a textbook.
For the record, that is one of the most refreshing things I find about you. I disagree with some of what you say, but you have passion and believe deeply in what you say.
And, for the record, I am a good woman, not a good sir.

All now cow tow to the Duke of Metaphysics, in all his naked glory!#9

I have to give you props for the phrase "Duke of Metaphysics".
The thing about movies like Waking Life and I Heart Huckabees is that they are supposed to represent soundbyte philosophy. They're meant for people who have some basic knowledge already rather than for people to GET knowledge from them, or at least just be a gateway to such thinking. So I'm pretty suspect of people who seem to have gotten all their philosophical views about life from some movie too. But still. Gotta let people be people. And maybe sometimes people arrive at these conclusions on their own, prompted by a movie.
