What are some problems in communities in America? I'm in a class about intervention and I have to do a project on problems in communities

this is for my Health 350: Intervention for Populations and comminities at Risk class. We have a list of mini projects we need to pick from. One is to write a poem relatin to a community problem. I would choose racism, but I'm writing a movie review for "CRASH" so I can't choose the same topic for the poem. So I wanted to know of other problems in communities.

One that I face on a frequent basis, which is a much more narrow topic, is bullying, especially amongst teenagers. There have been many articles written about the subject lately, about kids who have been bullied into depression and suicide, and the struggles of every day life for victims. It's very interesting (and sad), don't know if this would apply for you though.

Yeah, suicide and stress induced harm to oneself (cutting, and eating disorders) are pretty big problems.

A few people have already mentioned this but I think suicide & depression would be a good topic to write about.

Underage drinking is a huge problem around here. Drugs, too.

Along with all of the things previously posted, there's always this debacle in my town about whether or not to enstate a youth curfew in order to eliminate gangs, underage drinking, drug abuse, etc.

Another big one is pressure. Pressure to get into a good college from parents. Pressure to act a certain way & do certain things from friends. Pressure to get good grades from teachers/parents.

Many of my friends get literally 4 hours of sleep a night because they wake up, go to school, stay after for sports/clubs, go home & eat/shower, do the 5 hours of homework teachers assign nowadays, and get to sleep at 1.

There are no breaks. At least in the district I'm in.

Myspace has become a big problem in our community. On private school in the area created an account so they could view all the kids at the school's. If a kid had anything innapropriate they sent a letter home to the parents.

Crystal Meth beginning to destroy the gay community in West Hollywood and now taking over NYC...

An amen to Adoannie925.

And, access to basic medical and health care is a hugh problem for lower middle class and poor families. We are talking about basic health services that used to be covered by families' insurance plans. With many parents losing insurance coverage, many kids and young adults do not have the access to care.

And, sex education is the best tool for prevention. It is false to assume that just because a kid is ignorant about sex, that he or she will not have it.

AIDS is on the rise again in many communities.

Here is a suggestion, go to a local health clinic and interview the nurse or doctor there. Not a board full of folks happen to like BW musicals.

Thanks, youwantitwhen...

Crystal Meth is such a RIDICULOUS problem right now and I feel like no one is doing anything about it. It's so typical of our country, too. I'm in the midst of writing a huge research paper on Crystal Meth and how it's effecting the gay community as well as sky rocketing new strains of HIV/AIDS. It makes me feel so jaded about the world I'm living in. It's contributing to new aids cases so much and new strains from people who use the drug. I never understood when it was appealing to put floor cleaner, cough syrup and adderall up your nose (combine them all, add a few other chemicals and you've pretty much got Tina), but I guess we've gotten that desperate.

I have a very close friend from childhood who got into meth. Long story but we had a huge fight three years ago, right after he started using (which I did not know back then) and when we were friends, he was HIV Negavite. We were friends for over 20 years before thius happened.

He got into the gay party scene. He got into meth. He lost his job, his friends, and is no longer the man I knew. I now have to, in many ways, treat him as if he is dead. I would guess that he is now HIV positive, at least. He does not think he needs help.

I hear ya, youwantit...

I grew up with a friend that started with blow and then couldn't afford it and began tweaking with meth and it completely destroyed her. She finally went to rehab, but not on her own will. People read about it, but when you actually see how it transforms someone...it's completely different. It's so disgusting. I remember it being a budding problem in West Hollywood as I moved to NYC from WeHo, and now I see it taking over Chelsea.
