Sharon Gless was actually the third actress to play Cagney. Loretta Swit was in the TV movie then when it became a series, Meg Foster played the role. It was recast with Sharon.
From imdb:

In the TV movie that inspired the series, Christine Cagney was played by Loretta Swit. When the show first began, Meg Foster took over the role of Christine Cagney. After a few episodes, Sharon Gless eventually won the role and played Cagney for six years. A CBS spokesperson was quoted at the time as saying the reason for replacing Foster with Gless was the audience had trouble telling "the two leads apart".
Every year the show was on the air, the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series went to one of the stars of this show. Tyne Dalywon the award four times and Sharon Gless won twice.

I remember that episode! (Sharon Gless on Judging Amy.)
I was looking into the UK series on Amazon, but it's a lot of f***ing dough.
And I've heard the UK soundtrack. The theme song cracks me up. It's the total opposite of Spunk.

I always thought it was on tv for shock factor and as someone mentioned earlier, soft core gay porn. The first season was full of cliches and stereotypes, and while they improved a little the second season, they just couldn't keep it going.
I have to agree about Brian...what was so great about him? And if he was such a sex god, why settle for an annoying brat like Justin?
I got some dvd sets as presents...I guess that's what my family thinks you get gay people for their birthdays and Christmas...I usually fast forward if it doesn't involve Emmett or Debbie.
And yeah, the episode where Ted dates a "Fat" guy, that guy was like what 2 pounds overweight soaking wet? Geesh.

Fiction Writer, I think he’s saying “mad,” not “Matt.”
If you can track down an affordable copy, the UK version is well worth seeing (I love the actress who plays the Sharon Gless counterpart).

Posted: 7/20/06 at 2:05pmif you get the superior uk version only get the first part. part 2 should never have been made. if it weren't for how successful and loved the first part was, it would not have been made. just pretend it does not exist kinda like grease and grease 2.

Posted: 7/20/06 at 2:34pmThe UK version was a brilliant piece of tv. It's the kind of tv that the Brits do best, I believe; gritty and honest. I remember the furore that followed the initial screening of the scene between Aiden Gillan and Charlie Hunnam. It was pretty ground-breaking; I remember thinking, they're really not goinig to show that, are they?...and they did. Pity about the second series. It wasn't up to the first. I came late to the US version and thought it a 'glossy' but poor imitation of the UK original.

Is it? The copy I have sounds like "Matt".
I don't like the Brit character names. Stuart is in no way a sexy name, and neither is Nathan.
