Everyone knows him from Who Framed Roger Rabbit but he was also excellent in Mona Lisa, The Long Good Friday, Mermaids, Hook, Nixon, and Brazil. He even made that total disappointment Super Mario Bros. watchable. RIP
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this! He was a lovely actor. I first saw him in a Masterpiece Theatre series called "Flickers," and he was so unlike any leading man I'd ever seen.
He will be missed.

I'll come right out and say it, he was a sexy little beast.

Namo -- on the other thread I said the same thing about Hoskins. He's hot as hell in LONG GOOD FRIDAY.

Grrrrrrrrrowl!
To this day, I still list Hook as one of my favorite movies, and a lot of that was how much I love Bob as Smee. So, it feels a little empty for me today.
He was in no way, shape, or form any of the types I normally respond to, and yes, he was sexy as hell.
And a fine, fine actor.
The magic of WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? may have been created by special effects artists, but it was made believable due to the incredible talent of Bob Hoskins. Without his performance, that film may not have worked out as well as it did.
And yes, there is HOOK. In a film with Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts, one remembers the lovable Smee. Like a true pirate, he stole every scene he was in.
It almost seems almost inappropriate to mention a black comedy at this time, but I loved him in Passed Away with Maureen Stapleton, Frances McDormand, Pamela Reed, etc.
I very clearly remember him as the set electrician(Sparks) on the production I saw in London of "Veterans". prob now about 40 yrs ago. Incredible energy.
Sadly, he was not so involved w his family from his first marriage.
He will be missed.
Agree with Capn' Hook. There's no way Who Framed Roger Rabbit works as well as it does without his performance. It takes a great actor to be able to act so convincingly opposite something that (during filming) isn't there.

WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? is always fun to see! You're right, CapNHook, his performance made it oh so good and fun in that when actually filming against nothing. Being a very respected British actor, I somehow still don't think Hoskins got the full appreciation he deserved. Maybe after Roger Rabbit, the fame afterglow faded away gradually for him after that and reverted to being a character actor. Don't forget he was in PINK FLOYD'S THE WALL as Pink's manager--that expression and uttering "F--- me!" upon the sight of Bob Geldof's Pink incapacitated after breaking in his hotel room. I don't get to see a lot of movies these days as much as I would like. But I do read plenty of British movie mags like EMPIRE, SIGHT AND SOUND, and TOTAL FILM, so I was able to know other more British-centric films he did like TWENTYFOURSEVEN (but haven't seen yet).
RIP - such a great actor who leaves a wonderful legacy.

I've been rather sad all day since reading this news this morning. As a kid, Bob Hoskin was one of the driving forces behind my desire to act. He was so different and alive and - yes, sexy - and funny and brilliant in every way.
Such very sad news. A major talent.
