We lose another great artist...

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Here she accepts her special Tony Award for the 1981 The Lady and Her Music, which I was lucky enough to see three times, and sings "If You Believe" from The Wiz.

RIP

I saw "Lady and Her Music" as well, and it was electric.
God bless her!

RIP to a legend.

Another of MGM's stars has ascended. The first and only African American star in their roster.

What a life. What a career. What a talent.

Such a loss.

Let's hope SHE is remembered at next year's Oscars roll call.

There should be a tribute to her immediately for her body of work and contributions.

Seeing "Lena Horne, The Lady and Her Music" was one of the most memorable evenings I've ever spent in a theatre. She was a consummate performer...a true artist in every since of the word.

We need some Lena links here. For starters, Lena and Judy were great friends, in real life and on camera:

Now, Here's Lena singing some Broadway:

"Cockeyed Optimist" and "Some People"--she would have made a HELL of a Rose!:

This one will surprise you. "Love Me or Leave Me" followed by Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen's "The Eagle and Me" from Bloomer Girl:

Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs to Daddy":

And his "From This Moment On":

And a lovely "You'd Better Love Me" from High Spirits, the musical version of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit:

Here is the very first time I ever saw Lena Horne perform anything. I was a kid, watching THE COSBY SHOW:

Thank you TCM for reminding me.

I was hoping to find that famous 60 Minutes Ed Bradley (RIP) interview he did with her on YouTube in full, but I don't see it anywhere on it.

She was stunning and a legend. She should've been a bigger crossover superstar than she was. But race relations made sure that would not happen.

Fred Sanford was certainly enthralled by her. This hilarious Lena Horne episode was just shown on TV Land, as anticipated, in the aftermath of her passing:
