Random question about movies...

It's not about a particular movie, but I'm watching a behind-the-scenes show about a movie, and I realized that I have no idea what the click-y thing does before each scene. You know, the black and white thing that snaps down...any insight would be much appreciated. :)

The movie clapboard usually has the name of the movie, the director, the scene and the take written on it. Its main purpose is to be a cue that properly synches the image with the appropriate sound mix.

I forget the exact name, but basically, it's for editing purposes. With film, sound and pictures are recorded on different reels. This way, the editors can syncronize the sound and pictures at the beginning of the shot. As the bar comes down and makes a click, it's an obvious sound that's easy to match up with the film.

Does that make sense? Sometimes I have trouble explaining things.

Oh, wow, that makes sense! I always just thought they liked the sound of it or something, like it got the actors pumped to act. I never thought about it synching the sound. Whew, one more mystery solved! :)
