re: Reading? What's that?

A MASS FOR THE DEAD by William Gibson, author of THE MIRACLE WORKER. An exceedingly moving memoir and tribute to his parents.

Also, SOPHIE'S CHOICE, probably the last great American novel.

THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES by Joseph Campbell. It will illuminate and refresh your apprehension of things spiritual.

I just finished the DaVinci Code. You really do need to set aside a day to read it. You wont be able to put it down. I want to read Dan Browns other book. Is it as good as the DaVinci Code?

re: Reading? What's that?

I disagree.
I read the Da Vinci Code in one sitting.
And I regret it.
I wish I'd taken more time to try to analyze the riddles instead of plowing right through.

I've read every one of the Harry Potter books in one sitting as well.
Then, I just get really restless for the next couple years until the next book comes out.
The next one, I'm going to read it slowly.
And cherish it.
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

re: Reading? What's that?

I read DaVinci in about 5 days. That was enough time for it to soak.

re: Reading? What's that?

Sophie's Choice came before Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections, didn't it? Therefore, it isn't the last great American novel, Musicman. re: Reading? What's that?

The Da Vinci code is a well-crafted suspense story, but not as mind-blowingly good as people have been saying. It's one of those books that seems to lose substance the more you think about it. And the history in it...well, let's just say that in history, especially religious history, there's always more than one way of looking at things.

re: Reading? What's that?

I agree Plum. I loved DaVinci while reading it. Afterwards, it all seemed rather idiotic.

re: Reading? What's that?

Angels and Demons was actually better than DaVinci code in my opinion. I read the last two hundred pages without moving.

Yes, Sophie's Choice came before The Corrections and, in terms of ambition, theme, plot, scope, characterization, imagery, language, consolidation of American literary schools, historical imperative and execution thereof, is the last great American novel.

Anything Nicholas Sparks! Awesome writer. The Notebook was great!

Didn't Sparks write A Walk to Remember? Because I can't forgive that.

re: Reading? What's that?

I've been trying to read the DaVinci code forever. but the waiting list at my library is INSANE-and i dont usually buy books

the perks of ebing a wallflower IS really good. I read it so many times, and i always find something new to contemplate-it makes you think about life-just do it-its an awesome book

also very light and fluffy and shallow-but very entertaining

re: Reading? What's that?

I just started reading Middlesex and I am LOVING IT!
It's by Jeffrey Eugenides who wrote The Virgin Suicides.
It's about a transgender boy, born a girl and he goes back and tells the story of his grandparents and parents and him and why incestuous relations led to the genetic disorder that caused his problem.
GOOOOD stuff. Suggest you all read it!

Sammy, I HEART YOU! I'm totally engrossed in "Middlesex" right now..it's amazing. Seriously guys, go out and get this book, Jeffrey Eugenides won the Pulitzer for this book, and rightly so.

Also, one of my favs is "How Long Has This Been Going On?" by Ethan Mordden. GREAT book.
There are some people in the world who say that writing stories, or composing music or dancing sparkly dances is easy for them. Nothing interferes with their ability to create. While I celebrate their creative freedom, a little part of me just wants to punch those motherf*ckers in the teeth...[tos]

re: Reading? What's that?

All of these sound so great. I'm currently engrossed in assigned summer reading for AP Lit next year. I already finished Life of Pi. I am currently plowing through East of Eden. I'll read Lord of the Flies next, and then take an hour or two to read A Streetcar Named Desire.

After I am done with summer reading, I plan to read Fight Club.

Ender's Game is terrific. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, but this was amazing.
I second Sophie's World and Wicked as well.

re: Reading? What's that?

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein...cause it's just so fun!! Or Wicked, whatever. Or East of Eden. Or The Catcher in the Rye. Or To Kill a Mocking bird. And I need to stop rambling.
Real men are tenors.

re: Reading? What's that?

Ender's Game is indeed great. I'm not big on sci-fi either (like fantasy, it tends to be heavy on T&A book covers, which just pisses me off), but a lot of Isaac Asimov's work is just magnificent. Especially the Foundation trilogy. And absolutely read I, Robot before you watch the movie, just so you don't get your mind corrupted. Or, you know, don't watch the movie at all. :)

re: Reading? What's that?

I agree w/Insomniak...I like ANGELS AND DEMONS better than THE DAVINCI CODE.

Right now I'm reading VIOLETS ARE BLUE by James Patterson...freaky vampire stuff.

re: Reading? What's that?

Fight Club is a top notch read though Chuck Palahniuk's best book by far is Invisible Monsters.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

re: Reading? What's that?

I've never gone wrong with a book that won the Pulitzer.
That said, I'm thoroughly entranced by a recent Pulitzer winner right now: Empire Falls. Read it, love it, especially if you grew up in Smalltown, USA.
Also:
*American Gods (Neil Gaiman) - perfect if you like a dose of magic/fantasy in a realistic way.
*Anything by JRR Tolkien - read the Lord of the Rings trilogy and see if you can find an original idea in fantasy today that doesn't come directly from our Lord John Ronald Reul.
*Fear and Trembling in Sunnydale: Fun yet intense reading of philosophy on my favorite television show.
*Anything by Terry Pratchett.
*What's the Matter with Kansas? : How Conservatives Won the Heart of America by Thomas Frank - Absolutely wonderful book showing how the Republican party has managed, without really being ABOUT the middle class, to convince the Middle Class that it is exactly that.
*For fluff, enjoy some Christopher Moore books. Think Carl Hiaasen meets Stephen King meets Douglas Adams.
