I know that the best way to get good deals on plane tickets is to book in advance, and the best rates are really late/early morning on weekdays.
My friend decided to visit me in NY from SF, but this week is the only time she can fly out. She had so much time to decide if she wanted to come, and she decided a couple of days ago. Tickets to/from SF are normally in the 300-400 range..and the rates now are like 600-700. It's insane.
Is there a way to get reasonably priced last minute flights? Waiting lists? Anything?

I always find great deals on TRAVELZOO.COM. I think I actually saw some last minute R/T tickets to NY for 200 and some...... Check it out.. the deal may still be there

Also, check out alternate airports (Oakland vs. SFO, etc.) to see if the price comes down.
I think JetBlue flies direct from Oakland to JFK.
And check the individual airlines' Web sites (not just online travel agencies like Travelocity and Expedia). Sometimes the best fares are direct form the airline's inventory.

Sign up on the airline's website for last minute travel deals. I get a weekly E-mail from American & United with bargain fares for under booked flights every week (is it Tuesday?). You might get lucky.
I still find it easier to plan far far ahead. My recent flight to the West Coast coast half as much back in February when we booked it.
I use airfarewatchdog.com all of the time for last minute deals! You can sign up with your zip code and they send you e-mails twice a week with great deals from your local airports...
I'm going to Vegas next week on one of their deals. $219 rt. $300 for hotel for 4 days 3 nights...at the Luxor.
I got 2 weeks in New Orleans, air and hotel for under $700...booked only a few days in advance.
Oakland is also better in many ways than SFO in that it's smaller and easier to get to.
If you're picking her up (or want to make her drive or take CalTrain), you can also try San Jose.
