Watched Red State last night and I now officially give up on Kevin Smith. Haven't seen one film of his I liked. God, this was grim, dreary, cynical and ultimately, pointless. As soon as the church group were portrayed as an amalgam of Westboro and Branch Davidians, the story lost its focus and I knew we were in for nothing more than a shoot 'em up story. The bleakness and futility just brought it down further. It seemed like he was trying to make some ultimate point or message, but it's a needle in a haystack that's not worth finding. And if he's holding up a mirror to society, it must be one of those carnival mirrors that distorts reality. The few truths he tried to expose were lost in a sea of pure fantasy. But thanks for sticking up for the gays. They were a shining beacon of victimization, fear, self-loathing, stupidity and cowardice. Ugh.
