Tiff, what made you see Gods and Generals? Not only did the preview feel drab to me, but I was sure I wouldn't even bother watching this should it air on television after reading that it sympathized with the Confederate cause!
Spider-Man 2 was just going to be a funny, campy movie in my mind until I discovered that the vast majority of critics were proclaiming it as the most serious and significant comic book film of all time. While I was laughing as the credits rolled, my friend sitting next to me said: "That was NOT a good movie." I agree with her. The pizza scene, the scenes on Broadway and the scene with the hot guy who Mary Jane should've easily chosen over Peter Parker/Tobey Maguire were swell, but that's about it. So what was so bad (in the campy sense of the word) about this film anyway?
1) Maguire is just one of the most bland actors of our time. I will never buy the hype for him. He slows the pace of all his films with his monotone voice. Even buying him as a geeky superhero is difficult. Seabiscuit was painful to watch, too, but I blame that more on that cringe-worthy narration than on casting Maguire as a fiery protagonist (ahem).
2) Cheesy and over-the-top moments: Donna Murphy going wild as a piece of glass flies at her eye. Maguire in a sanctified mosh pit just before he gets the mask removed from his face. "Go get 'em tiger." Woman flailing her arms and running straight toward the camera as Dr. Octopus attacks. This film was truly a comic book come to life, which is not a good thing if it's meant to be so serious (now if it were just trying to be a fun film, that would be another story).
3) A big problem for me as a Chicagoan: Not only did they try to pass off the El as a New York structure, but they also borrowed Chicago architecture. I found it really distracting to see a site that I had just passed on my way to the movie theater in my native Chicago being presented as a New York structure. Sorry, just not acceptable. No suspension of disbelief possible there. They could've put an elevated train in the film without bringing Chicago with it.
4) Major mood swings. So which is it, a romance, a comedy or a romantic comedy on speed?
There are other points but I think I've said enough to get my weekly beatdown over a difference of opinion. :)
Oh, and HBO at 3:00AM is trying to be horrible. But at least it's erotic too. And boy have I tried to find the sex appeal in Maguire... he just needs to gain more weight. This has worked wonders for DiCaprio's sex appeal.
