Gospel singer Donnie McClurkin, who has detailed his struggle with gay tendencies and vowed to battle "the curse of homosexuality," said yesterday he'll perform as scheduled at the Republican National Convention on Thursday, despite controversy over his view that sexuality can be changed by religious intervention.
"I can't let off. I didn't call myself -- God called me to do what I do," McClurkin said. The Grammy winner declared, "If this is a war, we are willing to fight. Not a war of violence, but a war of purpose."
McClurkin wrote on a Christian Web site in 2002 that he struggled with homosexuality. "I've been through this and have experienced God's power to change my lifestyle," he wrote. "I am delivered and I know God can deliver others, too."
McClurkin blamed "the hatred of a few activists," for the flap. "They act as if my singing on the ticket is the same as singing at a Nazi rally endorsing Nazism."
Very interesting. I think people should live how they want to, and if living his life as a heterosexual is what is going to make him happy, then go for it.
But so many accounts indicate that few are ever able to live against their sexuality for very long--certainly not happily after a period of time. Many end up in a spiral of backsliding and misery. Many finally conclude that they are indeed gay--and then choose whether to date the same sex or remain celibate. It's a very painful issue.
I fought with my undergraduate newspaper for allowing ads that promoted changing your sexuality. I argued that it was deeply offensive--just as offensive as if they had been ads offering to change the color of one's skin from brown to white.
And, whether the GOP intends to make this statement or not, they ultimately are by including this singer.
I expect God will deliver Mr. McClurkin this week to the East Side Club.
Several times.
I'll let you know if I see him at the Unicorn.
Jesus wants him on his knees! :)
Wow - I read the title of this thread to mean something else altogether...
There's a great front page story in the Times today on the culture clash of demonstrations vs. conventioneers. At the very end (continued inside the paper), they cut to the floor of the Garden, where some Republicans are practicing "Tonight." The writer pointedly adds: a song from a show written by four gay New York -- and American -- men. Amen.
Hypocrisy, thy name is the Republican Platform. It's time to remember, if you sing songs by Bernstein and Sondheim, or teach "Glass Menagerie" in high school English, you're honoring great American writers -- great gay Americans. Tennessee Williams is taught in every school in this country; Bernstein's music is ubiquitous.
How can you celebrate the humanity in their work, their art--and consistently treat their lives, their very being, with so little humanity?
I thought the Gay Curse was rainbow flag cargo pants!
I saw someone wearing them this weekend...and not at the Unicorn Bookstore.

I am their GAY CURSE.
And to add to my post: If Leonard Bernstein and Tennessee Williams were alive today, they would have marched with us all yesterday. The outrage: how dare we celebrate their artistry while denying them rights as Americans and human beings?
But why stop with Americans? When Republicans -- who stand by their "values-suuporting" platform stand under the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, do they realize they are admiring the work of a debased sinner?
Auggie, you know I love you...., well now I love you even more if possible, bravo!

I hear they're doing a small bit on the Irish curse one night this week.
I do believe that as the extremist relgious wingnuts gain even more power in this country, (which even Papa whom I adore has to admit is exactly what is going to happen if Bush gets elected in November) you will actually see attempts at banning of playwrights like Tennesee Williams and the like in public schools. Please keep in mind that John Ashcroft spend $8000 of taxpayer money (my money, not the money of all the corporations that pay no taxes) to buy a drape to cover up the visible breast on a statue of Justice.
These are scary times.
It's hard to do a larger or longer bit on the Irish curse.
I'm especially looking forward to former Miss America, Erika SS Harold, get up and talk about abstinence. Seems like she had a little run-in with Kate Shindle...

I love Kate Shindle and the prevention work she did, and at the same time I have to support this pro-Chastity woman. Because any Miss America who is willing to go out on a limb and support an open lesbian like Chastity has to be pretty cool.
I thought the gay curse was a lesbian on the rag.
I love how she lied during the pageant espousing "anti-harrassment" as her cause. As soon as the crown was on her horrid head, she bamboozled the organizers and the judges by saying her real issue is abstinence. Then plays victim by saying that she's being bullied by the pageant.
Plus, she is a dead ringer for Paula Jones. When is her speech at the convention? I want to get out there and boo as loud as I can.
Here's my beef: If gay people can't get married but you have to wait until you're married to have sex, when are gay people supposed to have sex? Never, you say? Oh, okay. I'll take care of that.
is this anything like the curse of psoriasis?
Actually, Matt, it's two lesbians living together, on the same cycle.
papa...that's the heartbreak of psoriasis.
the gay curse is me as Laura Bush tonight at EST!
thank you, robbie, all i could hear in my head was paul lynne saying something "psoriasis." i knew someone here could come through with a correction.
Paul Lynde, Papa. Okay, you've proven you're straight.
so did he have to give back his toaster?
well, he certainly won't win the center square.

Auggie, pretty much unrelated to anything in this thread, but I saw some "why do you care who I marry" stuff on Democratic Underground. Everything from T-shirts to trucker hats to thongs to mugs. Not especially artistic but I thought you might be interested in spite of that.
