Tig! Yes! The best part of the FOTR commentaries.

Tig is fabulous.

Posted: 12/5/04 at 4:22amTrue, but Ian McKellen had already been robbed two years before. Plus his Gandalf was a revelation. Someone needs to give that man an Oscar, and pronto!

Posted: 12/5/04 at 1:41pmHave you noticed how when good actors (not outstanding) do an incredible job on one role (ie: Halle Berry, Charlize, Gwennie) they always seem to win because wow they really changed themselves for that performance! Wasn't that amazing! Where really really good actors will get the nom but won't win because they are bound to do something fabulous again and finally win. And so many are still overdue people! Like Ian McKellen, Kate Winslet, Johnny Depp etc.

This year is definitely a showdown between Jaime Foxx and Johnny, for starters.
But I did love it when the Academy finally gave Pete Jackson his due last year. I remember watching the show and my father kept saying, "They're not going to win, Laura, give it up. It'll be Lost in Translation."
I won $30 in cash later on. My picks were all RotK.

LOL, what was your dad thinking?? ROTK was a shoo-in.
I was also jumping with joy when Peter Jackson finally won his Oscar for Best Director. He pulled off the impossible; for decades no one thought the books were filmable. I still think he should have won for Fellowship as well.

Posted: 12/5/04 at 3:46pmMy dad hates fantasy movies. I also have a sneaking suscipion that he doesn't want to see it. We're watching all of the Oscar winners, working backwards from "A Beautiful Mind." So, the night of the ceremony, I say "You know, if RotK wins, we have to watch the whole trilogy," to which my dad goes "No...we don't...you can just tell me..."

Posted: 12/5/04 at 4:00pmNo offense to your dad, but I don't take the "I don't like fantasy films" excuse for one second. I have friends who say that too, but I think it's just laziness of imagination. Besides the fact that there's never been a fantasy film like the LOTR trilogy, there's not much that separates a film like LOTR from something like a historical epic. All films (except documentaries) are essentially works of fantasy.

I'm not exactly a huge fantasy person but I adore these movies. They were made to look like a history more than a fantasy. I hate people who used (it;s fantasy) as an excuse, well not hate. (majorly dislike!)

Posted: 12/5/04 at 7:02pmI don't think he wants to sit for twelve hours straight while there's stuff about hobbits and elves onscreen. IDK. He just doesn't want to see it.

Posted: 12/5/04 at 7:15pmBut what's the difference between watching hobbits and elves onscreen, and watching, say, Greek soldiers storming Troy? (Other than the fact that hobbits and elves are better directed, but I digress.) Some of my friends are the same way. Again, to me it shows a lazy imagination (which is sad, because we all used to play make-believe as children). I just wish people were more open-minded about what they may or may not like, especially with LOTR, because it really is a masterpiece of a film (or 3 films!).
