He also starred with Tuesday Weld in the romantic comedy BACHELOR FLAT and co-starred on the mid-1980s nighttime soap opera PAPER DOLLS. Not many know this but he committed himself to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. He may not have achieved the superstar status of say, Warren Beatty, but he did achieve personal success in other areas.

Funny you should mention Beatty, since he was considered for Tony in West Side Story and lost out to Beymer.

And it was while watching Warren Beatty in the rushes for Splendor in the Grass that they instead turned their attention to his costar for the part of Maria... Natalie Wood.

Besty, It seems that Beatty and Beymer were up for a lot of the same roles around that time. They were both pretty boys of the same type and build. In fact another Beatty/Beymer parallel comes to mind. Beatty starred on Broadway in William Inge's A LOSS OF ROSES.
ROSES was filmed circa 1963 as THE STRIPPER and guess who played Beatty's role in the film? You guessed it: Richard Beymer.
