An extremely funny man who had a tough life.

A little while ago I got the word that my aunt had died. Now this. Suddenly all the Christmas lights are dimming. I'm trying to type through the tears.
So very, very sad.
A click for life.

May God rest the soul of that beautiful, brilliant man. He is dancing out of his body, now - moving free and easy, laughing and greeting all the people who are running up to him to thank him for the laughter he gave them.
Years ago, when he had just done that his first special on HBO - - my father had just had a severe stroke - lost the use of his right side, couldn't talk - all he had was his room and the TV. The Richard Pryor special came on and Richard was talking about his ordeal in the hospital as a burn victim. I could see that Richard was transforming agony into laughter in front of our very eyes - and my father laughed so hard there were tears in his eyes. There were tears in Richards eyes, too - I swear - that beautiful silvery holy light that comes out of people who can do that - transform pain into laughter. Something profound was happening at that moment. That was what his life was about. What could be more sacred than that? I still remember how my father laughed.
Thank you, Mr. Pryor - I wish I had told you when you were still here what you did for my father - but now you know, I have no doubt of it. I have no doubt you're shocking the angels and the saints up there right now, and a whole lot of Irish souls are laughing.

Posted: 12/10/05 at 5:30pmPossibly the greatest comedian of all time--W.C.Fields is the only one else who might even come close. Funny, I was just thinking and talking about him because his birthday was Dec 1. It took a lot of spirit to survive as long as he did with all of his physical afflictions. He had a lot of anger (about all the right things) which he used to fuel an intensely humanist vision of the world. He's left a tremendous legacy.

Posted: 12/10/05 at 6:01pmThe word "genius" gets thrown around so much-- here's one who truly deserved to be called a genius. If you've never seen his autobiographical film "Jojo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling," it's worth renting. R.I.P.

A true giant has died. Thank God we have many of his performances preserved on video
He made fun of himself. In one concert, after he set himself on fire . he struck a match & said : What's this ? Richard Pryor running down the street. I have 3 of his best performances on DVD
