Santorum has said his wife had a 'miscarriage' but that is not what this is. Santorum has said no to abortion, even when the woman's life is in danger. However, when it comes to his wife, the rules change.
It's different when they do it, I guess.
Rick Santorum, the guy who said that doctors who perform abortions should be criminally charged and called exceptions to protect the life of the mother phony, had his wife undergo a partial birth abortion back in 1997.
In the 19th week of her pregnancy, Karen discovered during a routine exam that the fetus she was carrying had a fatal defect and was going to die inside of her. A long shot surgery was performed that required cutting directly into the womb. It carried a high risk of infection and was performed not to save the fetus, but to reduce Karen's complications while she attempted to go full term.
Two days later, she became severely feverish. She was rushed to the hospital and placed on intravenous antibiotics, which reduced her fever and bought her some time, but could not eliminate the source of infection: the fetus.
Karen was going to die if her pregnancy was not ended, if the fetus was not removed from her body. So, at 20 weeks, one month before what doctors consider 'viability', labor was artificially induced and the infected fetus was delivered. It died shortly thereafter.
They named it Gabriel Michael Santorum.
The event is obviously tragic, especially for Karen, who, like her husband, opposes any and all forms of abortion, even when it saves a woman's life. As her fever subsided, she realized what was happening and asked for drugs to stop the labor, saying, 'We're not inducing labor. That's abortion. No way.' But it was too late.
and in light of Santorum's recent comment about exceptions to save the mother's life being phony, here's this.
Today, hindsight being 20/20, Karen says she would have authorized the procedure after all, justifying the saving of her own life by explaining that her other children would have lost a mother.
As the article I read states, this procedure is considered by Santroum to be partial birth abortion. He also personally authorized one to save the life of his wife, who he loves, and that is fine by me. But what really gets me is the stunning hypocrisy here. Rick Santorum is opposed to any and all forms of abortion, even going so far to say that exceptions to save the life of the mother are phony and that doctors who perform abortions should be criminally charged. If he had his way, someone who was in the same situation as he and his wife was, will not be allowed to pursue abortion in order to save the mother and therefore, will have to die.
This man should be kept as far away as possible from elective office for the rest of his life.

Let's call them the Hypocricans :)
The thing that lifers don't want to admit is that 95% of the time, this partial birth abortion (not a medical term, btw) that they call horrendous (and often is for all involved) is done when the life of the mother is at risk. I had a very good friend that had to have one. Her baby had a two chambered heart and was covered in tumors. My friend had severe hypertension. The baby would not live outside the womb regardless of the gestation and each passing day put the mother at more risk. They had to induce labor. When the medical paperwork arrived from the military hospital the procedure was called a D&X/abortion. Very few doctors would perform this procedure if the mother's life were not at risk.
This dude is the definition of hypocrite. "It's unacceptable unless it's the mother of my children!" His wife is the #1 argument of why it needs to remain legal. It's a slippery slope to outlawing all forms. It's a very personal thing. I don't believe a right-to-lifer's argument holds water if they haven't adopted at least 5 five children from the foster care system.
Santorum has signed the GOP's "Susan B. Anthony" pledge, which commits them to only appointing anti-abortion judges to the banch, and only hiring anti-abortion advocates to prominent cabinet positions. Most of the GOP candidates have signed on, except for Romney, Huntsmann, and Cain. The link below show's Sanotrum's signed pledge.
Santorum
The bottom line is that if abortion was illegal, his wife would be dead. His hypocrisy makes me ill.

I believe Santorum claims his wife went into labor and that it wasn't induced, for what it's worth.
Am I just not seeing them or does the article not cite any sources? (And the second article seems to just quote from the first.)
It sounds like that may be the case, though there are opposing stories now. One says she was induced and when she was aware of the circumstance asked it to be stopped, though though it was too late. She says it was the right thing to do. There's no way to know what really happened. Regardless, Santorum says that if it came down to a choice between his wife and child dying or just his child, it would be an easy decision. The fact that he was given that option proves that his opposition is bull$hit. He would have made that choice.

They made up the name "partial Birth abortion" so it means what ever I say. Santorum's wife had a partial birth abortion.
