Rita Moreno: A Memoir to be released March 13th

I don't like the way she bashes Natalie Wood in WSS, and she acts as if Richard Beymer wasn't in the film at all. She never says anything at all about him. But she gets that groaning "movie actors" look in her eyes, just the same. What the hell does she think SHE was back then? A movie actor. Singin' in the Rain, The King and I ...

That's why she got the part, and they almost didn't cast her because, at 30 (and compared to everyone else being cast for the film), she was considered too old to play Anita. She got the part because she was a "movie actor" just like Wood and Beymer and Tamblyn.

I like Rita, and I think she was brilliant as Anita, but she does a lot of that clueless "pot, kettle, black" thing.

I agree with you Besty and George Chakiris called her out on her constant bashing of Natalie Wood and put a stop to it. George Chakiris had a very close friendship with Natalie Wood as did assistant choreographer Howard Jeffrey. Jerome Robbins adored her.
