Quoth the mayor of Toronto: "Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine. But no, do I, am I an addict? No. Have I tried it? Probably in one of my drunken stupors, probably approximately about a year ago."

Any Torontoans (Torontonites?) here? Can anybody shed any light on this situation? Or is it just the out-and-out circus it appears to be?

ETA: And my favorite slime-ball politician quote of the day--beating out a strong challenge from Rand Paul's thing about wanting people to "leave him the hell alone" is Rob Ford's

"I wasn’t lying; you didn’t ask the correct questions."

GENIUS!!!

One article I saw referred to him as "cocaine using," which I thought was mighty white of them.

ONCE...IN A DRUNKEN STUPOR. The show that will save NBC!

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. I've been following this story for a couple of days now. It's hilarious.

If someone told me this story, including the quotes, I would not believe them.

He reminds me of Chris Farley.

This man makes every thinking person in Toronto ashamed and embarrassed. Sadly, because we have no legislation to remove the GD sumabitch, he can stick around for the rest of his term. My big fear is that in a year, he wants to try and run again and because of his doctrine of fiscal conservatism and his "regular Joe" persona. ( never mind the fact his Dad became a millionaire and he has only ever worked at the family firm and part time volunteer football coach) and people's short memory span he could run again and even possibly win. (cringe)
So, whatever u think about yer new mayor in New York, remember- it really COULD BE WORSE!

This guy looks and sounds like Canada's answer to Chris Christie.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

AC! You've left the honeymoon suite for a breath of fresh air! Good to see you...

I have to go with Taz on this one--Ford is way more Chris Farley than Chris Christie--he's a caricature.

Addison, unfortunately, I've been back in the real world since Tuesday...but yes, the Farley comparison is apt! Especially when he puts on a tie.

I have thought hard about this. The only way Psycho Rob will go is if his family's business ( a label company) is threatened . I can only hope clients start to exit - canceling contracts/renewals. Otherwise he thinks he is being a brave lil toaster soldiering on in the face of all the wicked adversaries.

"Any Torontoans (Torontonites?) here? Can anybody shed any light on this situation? Or is it just the out-and-out circus it appears to be?"

The preferred term is "Torontonians" and I am ashamed to say that I am one. It pretty much is the circus that it appears to be, and now we have the whole world laughing at us. Though I find the situation quite depressing considering I pay a fortune in property taxes to fund this guy's joke of an administration.

Today his mother and sister were on a local morning show, and according to his mother, the only problem that he has is with his weight, and if he could just lose a few pounds, all of his problems would go away. http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/11/07/rob-fords-mother-thinks-he-does-have-a-problem-his-weight/

Now I understand where he learned to not take responsibility for his actions and blame the world for his mistakes.

This guy is the best anti-drug PSA there is.

Reading up: This dude is a piece of work!

Fellow Torontonian here.

I am pretty embarrassed to admit it though at this point. This is pretty sad, the whole situation. I'm hoping he resigns any minute now.

I can't beleive this was a top story on CNN and now - the BWW Boards have caught wind!

After the "in a drunken stupor" quote I was amused. I mean, it was like it was from a sit-com or something.

The more it unfolds though I just feel sad for him. He so obviously has a very real problem and needs help. And he seems to be surrounded by enablers and a family who is in denial.

He should take a leave and get some help. With his weight and addictions the guy has one foot in the grave.

Yes, Taz; I agree.

On the surface, Ford is a buffoon and an irresistible target for derision. I also find it really provoking and anger-inducing to watch a public official act with such apparent contempt for the well-being--fiscal and emotional--of the community they were elected to serve. I can only imagine the sorrow and rage of the Torontonians.

Having been a drug addict, though, I suspect that much of that brazen bravado is the product of fear and desperation. Fear of reality, fear of facing the consequences of one's actions and fear of life without the chemicals that you know are killing you. It's only 'fun' when you're high. Eventually, that stops being fun. If you're lucky, you can find another path.

It was funny--maybe?--watching Whitney Houston spin her delusional denials for Barbara Walters ("Show me the receipts!!") but there was nothing funny about the way her life ended.
