Mine is a tossup between Keith Moon and Neil Peart

for future reference...

Buddy Rich ( www.buddyrich.com ) is called by many "the best drummer of all time"
and Mike Portnoy ( www.mikeportnoy.com )has been the drummer for progressive metal band "Dream Theater" (my favorite band, btw) for 11+ years, amongst many other side projects and guest appearances.

While there is no doubt that Buddy Rich is one of the greatest drummers of all time, I have never known him to be associated with Rock and Roll.

phantom, digitaldreamdoor.com made a list of who they thought were the 100 greatest drummers in rock, and Neil was named #1.

Here's the list:

Neal Peart? Rock and Roll? That's fricking prog-jazz fusion noodling.

You wanna hear the heart of rock and roll beating? Calling Meg White.

hey pab, i don't suppose you took notice to the fact that in parentheses is "perhaps more jazz than RNR" hmm, seems a little redundant.

Ah the Throwing Muses. YOU'RE the real Ramona, n69n.

I actually have a tie, two absolute favorites. Mr. Peter Prescott of the incredibly fantastic Mission of Burma. And, of course, Mr. Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls (pictured left).

ginger baker is a good choice too, i hadn't even thought of that. i'd like to point out that the two "rock" drummers I named are in the top 15.
