omg ... i'd totally forgotten about this sketch. i've had the one of him dancing swan lake with that big pig recorded for years ... one of my favorite clips of all time.

There are nudes and dance belt pics out there if you search.
He was a good guy. I had always heard about his sadistic side and his temper but I worked with him for two projects and he was always very kind.

He must have changed then. I met him twice and both times he was just mean. I also know someone who worked with him in the road tour of "The King and I" ( I saw it and Rudolph gave one of the most unintentionally funny performances I have ever seen - he was that bad). The stories my friend told about the tour showed what a lecherous, self asorbed a**hole Nuryev had become.

I prefer to think of him onstage when he was in his prime - Nobody did it better.

Maybe he behaved since he had such high respect for Mr. Joffrey.
He got sick while we were at the Mark Hellinger and before they decided to canel that weekend's performances I found myself standing in front of Mr. Joffrey and Arpino in Nureyev's dressing room wearing his Spectre de La Rose costume.

PalJoey - that weekend's performances were cancelled as Rudy had to appear at every show. I did do the role on the road however and I doubt I was brilliant.

Glebb, I have no doubt you were brilliant.

There was a gorgeous exhibit at the Brandywine Museum in Pennsylvania a few years ago entitled: "Capturing Nureyev: James Wyeth Paints the Dancer" Some photos (including some of the beautiful nudes) were a part of the exhibit. Such strength and such softness at the same time...
"Two drifters off to see the world. There's such a lot of world to see. . ."

The only time I saw Nureyev live was during The King and I tour in Toronto. It was quite amusing to see him bumbling around the floor in a primitive polka during "Shall We Dance."

I just read that Toronto was the first stop on that tour ('89-'90).
