Still Hurting from "The Last 5 Years"
Lets not do L5Y anymore. Try The Man That Got Away by Gershwin in a belty key.

Yeah, you're right, it's really overdone. It was just the first song to come to mind.
Speaking of Gershwin, perhaps you can lower the key "My Man's Gone Now." I'm not sure how it would sound belted, but apparently Chita did it for her WSS audition.

Just because you can belt doesn't mean you have to belt.
Is this for just you or a chorus?
An audience is more likely to cry if you try not to cry. Got that?
Be brave in your song, the old smiling through tears gambit, and the audience will just plotz. That's why Barbra's My Man works well. Yes, there are tears but you can't hear them in her voice.
Or, speaking of Barbra, reinterpret a happy song. Happy Days Are Here Again in its original tempo is quite peppy. Sad subtext on a heretofore happy song.
try The Music Still Plays On from A New Brain or something from Elegies...
Bill from Show Boat comes to mind. Very classic.
Try "Anytime (I Am There)" from Elegies

Try and stay away from contemporary songs as much as you can in auditions, because it's all anyone ever hears anymore. But then again, don't go singing "If I Loved You"...But if you absolutely had to go contemporary, check out "When Hope Goes" from The Spitfire Grill, it's been a very successful acting song for me.
Remember, just because a song's lyrics are sad, doesn't mean an audience will connect with it. The lyrics depend on you to make them work.

My Man from Funny Girl
"Maybe I Like it This Way" is from The Wild Party is one of my favs, but it might be overdone.
These are things that make me a little emotional when I'm singing them...
"I Get a Kick out of You" from Anything Goes (my interpretation of it is not from the context of the play, and is downright depressing... She can't feel, except for when she's with this one man. But he doesn't love her.)
"There's a Fine, Fine Line" from Avenue Q
"All Grown Up" from Bare
"A Quiet Night at Home" from Bare
"Hard Candy Christmas" from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
"Far from the Home I Love" from Fiddler on the Roof
"The Movie in My Mind" from Miss Saigon
"Now That I've Seen Her" from Miss Saigon
***"Children of the Wind" from Rags (Man, I love this song!)
"Back to Before" from Ragtime
"Stars and the Moon" from Songs for a New World
"I'm Not That Girl" from Wicked
"how did we come to this" from Lippas Wild Party. it's a great and VERY emotional song.
"Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime
"Being Good Isn't Good Enough" from Hallelujah, Baby!
"The Next Time it Happens" from State Fair
"If I Told You Now" by JRB
"Missing You (My Bill)" from The Civil War
