Posted: 12/14/11 at 12:22pmI'm very, very worried for Shailene Woodley. If you've seen "The Descendants," I assume you'll understand how passionate I am about the beauty of her performance. She transforms that role (think the N2N Natalie-type) into something so real and artful. She and Clooney really hold that movie together and create such a wonderful bond on the screen. It would be very sad to not see her nominated for the Oscar- what an amazing jump from that ABC Family crap fest she's on!

The SAGs are a good predictor of the Oscar nominations, so yeah, this could be what the awards look like though I have to think J. Edgar will be running on fumes up to Oscar time.
As for Damages, it scored a deal with DirecTV to show 2 seasons of material after their agreement with FX never happened (and looking back I think FX wished they kept it rather than disappointing boxer show Lights Out). Even as a fan of the show, as well as Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, and John Goodman, this season looked way too pulpy for me.
It seems shows like Fringe get their moment for the Critics Choice Awards which while not a good predictor for the Emmys, it almost is a great alternative for the Emmys.

Jon Cryer over Jim Parsons? Betty White over Amy Poehler?
Bah.

I feel like Jon Cryer was nominated by the actors for all the stuff he put up with last season and handling the Charlie Sheen debacle fairly well. Still, it's a ridiculous nomination when you consider everyone who was passed over.
I am shocked that Betty White got nominated over Evan Rachel Wood in the TV Miniseries/Movie category. It's just absurd at this point, we get it, you love her, now can we move on to award the deserving performances? I don't even agree with the HOT IN CLEVELAND nomination, I think she basically shows up and phones it in as opposed to the likes of Amy Poehler (hugely underrated), Martha Plimpton and even Maya Rudolph. I also can't believe that PARKS & REX got the shaft over THE OFFICE which has become unwatchable.
I was pleasantly surprised by the acting nominations...mostly. I can't believe Patton Oswalt and Charlize Theron were given the cold shoulder for their roles in YOUNG ADULT, ugh. Also, no Vanessa Redgrave for COROLIANUS? That's a huge surprise.

Anytime! :) As do I. Wish more people felt that way so it wasn't always on the verge of getting cancelled.

How could Parks and Rec be snubbed for best TV comedy ensemble, really? That cast is perfect together. It's the best ensemble on television right now.
I enjoy Parks and Rec, and I agree it should have been nominated. However, it's nowhere near the best ensemble on TV. That would be the cast of Modern Family, which will deservedly win that award.

Sueleen - I watch Enlightened for Laura Dern and as much as I want to love it, I simply can't stand the characters. If there was a way to generate some sort of sympathy for her then I could see it working, but she's so delusional and pathetic, I can't help thinking she deserves all the crap she's constantly whining about. Dern is excellent at this character (perhaps too good at making her so convincing), but it doesn't help the writing or the concept which is really putting me off. Yes, we've all known one of these people in our lives, but we avoid them for a reason.
My favorite Dern performance is still Citizen Ruth. I watch that film every time I need to detract from the memory of Inland Empire.

See, Matt, I totally get her. Trying so hard to be good in a crappy world. I have not seen the entire season yet, but I just want to hug Amy. Plus Mike White is my dream best friend.
Agree about Citizen Ruth. Brilliant performance. My favorite abortion movie next to Vera Drake.
I have to check out Inland Empire, I somehow missed that.

Oh, God. I wish I could forget Inland Empire. I'm only going to warn you once. After that, don't come crying to me.
I've only watched 4 episodes of Enlightened and at first, I sorta wanted to give her a hug, but after the kayaking episode, I get the feeling that the point of this character is that she's a constant victim. And often of herself.

Was 'Once Upon a Time' eligible for Best Televeison Drama Ensemble because if it was, it's too bad that it was snubbed.
"Damages is still on? I honestly had no idea. I have not seen one ad or heard any buzz about the show. I thought it was canceled."
Christina Applegate was once nominated for 'Smantha Who' after the show was cancelled.

'Parks & Recreation' is my favorite sitcom next to 'Modern Family'. It deserved a nomination much more than 'Glee'. But you are right the emsemble on 'Modern Family' is THE BEST on television.

Posted: 12/14/11 at 5:04pmRoscoe, the SAG Awards only do a general acting category for their TV nominations, so they nominate supporting and lead all in one category, that's why you have people like Julie Bowen, Betty White, and Sofia Vergara (who go for supporting at the Emmys, and I imagine the Globes) getting in with Edie Falco and Tina Fey who are the clear leads of their series. I thought Peter Dinklage would get in, I was very surprised that he didn't.

I think Dinklige was in the running but in the final vote he came up a little short.

I love Dinklage to death, but there's a lot of big names on this list, and he's still a relatively small actor.
