That best actor nod for Demin Bichir in "A Better Life" couldn't be more out of left field. No one could have seen that coming.
Shailene Woodley is sadly missing from the supporting actress list. She's phenomenal in "The Descendants" and I hope her performance isn't looked over come Oscar time.
I'm kinda confused as to how "Downton Abby" is considered a "television movie or miniseries" since season two starts airing in the US next month.
Downton Abbey is a series, not a mini-series. Even if it had been cancelled after Season 1, it still is a series.
They did the same thing with the Emmys though, so I'm not sure what the rule is. Perhaps number of episodes? Don't know.
All in all, a good list for the movies.

I hadn't seen Downtown Abby prior to their Emmy wins so when I finally sat down to watch it on Netflix Instant I was very surprised to have it end on a cliffhanger.
If Jessica Lange doesn't win OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES there is no justice.
Very surprised no Oldman or Fassbender for Best Actor. Heck with Nolte getting nominated for Warrior, I am surprised Tom Hardy couldn't squeak out a nod for Best Actor.
Hope Bridesmaids takes Best Ensemble.
Sadly unsurprised that the cast of Community got shafted for Best Ensemble. Outside of Carell's swan song for awards season, is The Office really even worthy of accolades now? I guess I should not even complain since Modern Family will predictably sweep their categories.
Patrick Adams in Suits is a real surprise in best TV Actor in a drama. I know the Mad Men gap helped his cause but I would have gladly have put Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad in as the whole first half of the fourth season was about Jesse's descent and desperation.
Happy Kyle Chandler got one last nomination but disappointed Connie Britton also was not nominated, for Friday Night Lights obviously.
I know Melancholia is not the most accessible fare but dammit if Dunst and Gainsbourg were not as worthy as the rest of the Best Actress and Supporting Actress categories.
Chastain and Pitt's work in The Tree of Life took a step back for their more accessible fare with The Help and Moneyball.
I've been checking the early awards noms to see what the Oscar noms are going to look like, and I feel like I have no clue. I mean...is THE HELP really going to be nominated for Best Picture???
I was underwhelmed by Bridesmaids, though McCarthy was terrific. I would have preferred some love for Crazy Stupid Love, which I thought had great ensemple work. I think supporting actress in a movie is a very intriguing category. I know the TV categories are crowded, but room should have been made for Ed O'Neill.
"The Help," "The Descendants," and "The Artist" seem to be the three sure-fire locks for Best Picture. Reviews will probably determine the fate of "War Horse," which is also likely. "Hugo" or another picture will likely round out the batch of 5.
I am a huge fan of all three of the films I cited as locks, so I am more than happy with the way things are panning out.
If THE HELP is nominated for best picture, it will be because of one woman: Viola Davis. Against all odds, that woman not only gave an absolutely stellar performance, but she bent over, picked up the big bag of SH*T-schlock that was laying at her feet and raised that film right on over her head like the baby-naming scene in ROOTS. It will be a triumph that belongs to her, and her alone.
If I could give a standing ovation to a comment, it would be RobbieJ's description of Viola Davis in the help. Well done, sir.
It may be blasphemy, and I may offend most of the western hemisphere, but here goes: I don't think Betty White deserves a nomination for every screen appearance. Don't get me wrong, I love her, but it's a shame that in a crowded category, she got a nom and Melissa McCarthy and Martha Plimpton did not. For the TV side of the noms, the SAG seems to be getting very predictable.

BLASPHEMY!?! Once I saw that, a scene from Ab Fab passed through my head: Patsy, sitting next to her sick, evil mother saying, 'Oh, just DIE already!'*
Oh, and thanks, strummer! I try to please!
*Not that I want Ms. White to die. But the death of nominating her every time she gets her hair did and shows up in front of a camera would be fine with me.
I've learned better than to hope for Community noms no matter how much they rightly deserve them. Also, sad no SOA or P&R noms.
I agree about Betty White. Love her, but stop already. Nominations like that are so hollow.
Plimpton deserved to be nom'd instead, imo.
LOVE the nom for Lange.
Man, I skimmed. I thought for sure Amy Poehler got nominated for Parks & Rec, at least. Her and Plimpton not there is egregious.
Fairly flawless list. Glad to see that the Malick mess was completely shut out and Chastain got her nomination for the correct film. Was also thrilled that they recognized Berenice Bejo, who, to me, is just as integral to THE ARTIST as Dujardin. Really, really pleasantly surprised.

Too bad 'Parks & Recreation' didn't get any nominations.
I really don't have a problem with Betty White's nomination for Hot in Cleveland. She does makes me laugh and I enjoy the show. But skipping over Melissa McCarthy for Mike and Molly, Amy Poehler for Parks and Recreation, and Connie Britton for Friday Night Lights is not okay.
And Jon f*cking Cryer for Two and a Half Douchebags? Seriously??? I get that the Emmys can often be a bit clueless, but SAG?!?! I'm sorry, but that nomination negates any and all bitching about Betty White.
Damages is still on? I honestly had no idea. I have not seen one ad or heard any buzz about the show. I thought it was canceled.
How could Parks and Rec be snubbed for best TV comedy ensemble, really? That cast is perfect together. It's the best ensemble on television right now.
Love the nominations for Good Wife- well deserved as one of the only great dramas left on broadcast networks. Also thrilled to see the long-unrecognized Kyle Chandler on the list- would love him to repeat his Emmy win! I too was disappointed to see no P&R nods, as well as the unsurprising but frustrating snubs for John Noble, Anna Torv, and the cast of Fringe.
