http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/article/top-ten-reasons-not-to-make-batman-3

What do you guys think? Honestly, as much as we all want another one, it may be better to just end the story here. There is NO WAY that a third film could possibly capture the magic that THE DARK KNIGHT made. If this were to turn into another X-MEN/SPIDER-MAN, it would be pretty tragic...if only because both of the Batman films were better than anything those series had to offer.

In my own view, Heath Ledger's Joker was not just a great villain...he was the UBER-villain. He is such a perfect antagonist for Batman that I doubt any further villain could possibly measure up. Other villains couldn't even top the amount of carnage that The Joker is able to inflict, much less the thematic weight that The Joker carried.

Maybe they should just end it here. A terrible third film to finish off a trilogy would be pretty sad. I have total faith in Nolan but topping that movie is a huge task.

Only if Heath reprises his role as the Joker.

Technically there's been about a thousand or so, but I think Mr. Sandwich is referring to the latest incarnation.

Eh I don't know. Is there anyone else who thought The Dark Knight wasn't all it was cracked up to be? I found it to be about 45 minutes too long and Bale's performance a little too wooden. I didn't think it was THAT good that they shouldn't make another one because there is no way that it could live up to the standard of Knight.

Anyone who does not think there will be a third Batman after the money the last one made is insane. It will be made with or without Nolan. As we speak, Brett Ratner is practicing his pitch to the suits at Warners.

I see no reason, with the right villain, another movie couldn't be just as good. I wouldn't say The Dark Knight was the best movie I've ever seen (as good as it was), so no reason a follow-up couldn't be strong. Just so long as they stay away from The Penguin - I always hated that character.

The question isn't WILL is happen romantico, of course it will.
The issue is SHOULD there be another.

It was the third one in the last series that jumped the shark.

I don't think there "should" be any sequels or "franchises" (I hate that word, but it's appropriate because it sounds just like a McDonald's).

But that would require Hollywood to actually THINK. And they don't want to come up with original ideas and produce them. They want to give you the same hit movie you saw last year with a new title sequence and "guest star," and watch you open your wallets again.

There WILL be another Batman film. But that wasn't the question.

Besty - but books and movies have long since had this situation, no?

I'll use my usual argument when people criticize a new broadway show they hear is in development based on a movie, or song catalog, etc

Ultimately - the source material doesn't matter as much as the execution (book, music, lyrics, etc).

There has been tons of original crap and tons of (for lack of better phrase) exploited crap.

Conversely, there have been wonderful original productions and wonderful stagings of shows based on movies.

There are - as always - exceptions to the rules!

I hope to God Brett Ratner doesn't touch Batman. He was SUCH a success with X Men: The Last Stand...ugh.

I'm not a comic-book movie fan, but the Nolan-Bale Batmans are actually worth my time. This series with any other director would be pretty mediocre, in my opinion.

Craig, I guess I didn't mean "original" in its purest form, as in "not based on any previously existing material." (the Academy's definition?)

That's not what I meant at all. (I know there was an earlier thread discussing "original" musicals, so I see what you're saying.)

However, all I meant is that I don't want a spontaneously conceived sequel or an impromptu franchise created out of every hit movie. Part 2, 3 or 6.

I stopped going to movies with numbers after them, about six years ago, and I've never regretted it.

But something intended and conceived as a trilogy (like Lord of the Rings)... I'm fine with that.

I'm not fine with them splitting the last Potter book into two films and milking it. I'm fine with the Chronicles of Narnia movies, though, based on each of the books.

I'm fine with the Bond movies in theory (although personally I've lost interest in them), because they were conceived as a series of stories by the author.

But when we keep getting Shrek 6, Are We Really Done Yet Still? or The Even Darker Knight, it just irritates me. And bores me.

Absolutely! James Earl Jones as a mild mannered black history professor at Gotham University who, after a knock on the head becomes "King Tut." David Hyde Pierce as "the Scoutmaster," an effeminate Boy Scout Leader who loots Gotham with his band of teenage scouts. And of course Cher as "Lola Lasagna!"

That I can agree with

For a second I thought you were shunning Godfather II,Star Trek II, Terminator 2 (forget III please and no no no we don't need IV), and the like.

Every once in awhile a good spontaneous sequel comes up. I really liked Toy Story II. I worry about III though.

Horror/Sci-Fi movies are the worst culprites. The action movies. The comedies.

Dear Christopher Nolan,

Please don't take what I'm about to say as a challenge. No, really, please don't.

Yours,
has faith

I say there SHOULD be a third 'Batman' film. There's no way it can be any worse than the third 'X-Men' film, right? ;D

if it's as good as the last two were, absolutely. were they the greatest movies ever made? nope, but they were darn good comic book movies that reinvented a classic character in an entertaining and contremporary way.

why not?

I'd rather Nolan conquer Lucky Charms: The Movie and explore the dark side of leprechauns searching for their cereal

Or perhaps TRIX: The Movie (CG/live action)

Or since Nolan likes heist movies - what about

Cookie Crisp: The Motion Picture

Lucky Charms would be great- an existential meditation on the poor Leprechaun, cursed with the ownership of his "Lucky Charms" that "everyone" is "Always" after. I'm undecided about casting- maybe Kevin Spacey as the Leprechaun and Dakota Fanning as the girl who's after him?

If it's anything like The Dark Knight, then no. I was bored out of my skull. The only interesting part was trying to spot the scene locations I recognized from my morning ride to the office back when they were filming.

Kevin Spacey would be good casting.

Just think of the movie-turned-musical that could hit Broadway after!

count me among those who definitely thinks there should be a third installment. i think chris nolan is one of the best directors out there right now and has completely reinvented the series. i love "batman begins", but "the dark knight" was something else all together... it was epic... i'm sure they'll make a third after the crapload of money it made. and hopefully with nolan directing.

Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale have both said they will never do a film with Robin in it.

That said, I would love a Batman film that covered Jason Todd/Tim Drake. Preferably more than one film, because I don't know if you can cram that all into one. We have all the "in the beginning" Batman stuff covered, and the "getting settled in Gotham" Batman movies, and then finally the movies with Dick Grayson. It's time to move on.
