Just a heads up, a lot of movie theaters are doing showings tonight starting at 7pm so if you want to see it sooner than midnight tonight, check your local listings. I'm going at my 7pm showing tonight. CAN.NOT.WAIT!
Also, if you want to pop a review in here when you see it, bah-ring it!

There's a new STAR TREK movie?
No, it's a re-release of the original movie with Shatner.
My dad saw two advanced screenings already and still hasn't taken me. I want to hit him.
Boooooo dad
Seeing it in 40 minutes! I would've gone at 7, but the 7:40 showing at my theatre is a digital projection, so my group and I decided to wait the extra 40 minutes for the better quality.
OMG, that movie was SOOOO good. I am not a trekkie whatsoever but I was on the edge of my seat (Cliche, huh?) the whole time. The acting, to the sets, to the special effects, to the lighting of it all....it was amazing. Quinto was definitely the best part for me. He embodied a character at war between his two halves (Vulcan and Human). There was a speed bump towards the middle where Kirk meets a certain person but it got back on track. Now, I want to see it in IMAX. Oooooo *drools*
Fantastic. They nailed the characters and it was just a gorgeous movie. Great score, too.
I agree. the score fit the movie PERFECTLY
Very good score.
I'm not a trekkie and I only ever really watched VOYAGER, which I loved and have seen every episode.
This made me want to watch the original series.
Movie felt short though, no?
And I wasn't expecting all the humor!
I was never a Trekkie - I watched Andromeda more. But I have to see this for Karl Urban who's playing McCoy. I've had a crush on him for 13 years! "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor not the God of Love!"

I loved it. (My knowledge of Star Trek being average or slightly above.) I can't say it exceeded any expectations, because I knew from the cast and the creative team that I was definitely going to enjoy it.
The entire cast either met (Cho, Saldana, Pegg, Yelchin) or exceeded (Pine, Quinto, Urban) all my preconceived affections. I think the story twisted admirably to explain how all the characters were joined together at that moment and under those circumstances.
Also, totally hot for Quinto's Spock. I mean, I knew I would be, but that doesn't make it any less unnerving.
I just came home from the 10 pm showing and they had to open another theather because the other one was full! The IMAX was sold out so I have to wait til next time.
It was crazy and kinda fun seeing people in costume!
The actors were beautiful and amazing and it was nice to see the story behind Capt. Kirk and the Enterprise!
I was more of a TNG fan but seeing this movie makes me want to get a blue ray player and see the whole original Star Trek in all it's glory:)
I feel bad I got rid of some original memorabillia but am glad that I kept some :)
It was a treat seeing the Starfleet Academy as I am here in SF and seeing the GG was incredible.
Of course, I had to get the 4 collectors glass at Burger King.

This made me laugh a lot.
Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film as 'Fun, Watchable'
Karl exceed your expectations? Oh yay. I feel like a proud mother.
He's made American films (Doom, Bourne Supremecy, LoTR 2 & 3) but I'm really hoping that this is the film that gets audiences to really notice him.
WOAH. The movie definitely exceeded my expections. And although it was just over 2 hours, it felt like 70 minutes -- which is a good thing.
I was particularly suprised by Anton Yelchin. I had no idea he'd end up being so charming and utterly adorable. Simon Pegg's Scotty was hilarious, but still real and believable. Quinto and Pine are both overwhelmingly charismatic and fun to watch. Bruce Greenwood's Pike made me long for a Pike-oriented TV series -- he was THAT good. And of course, what can we say about Leonard Nimoy, giving us an even older, more-comfortable-with-his-emotions Spock. Pure class.
The movie LOOKS and sounds fantastic, and the Enterprise itself is just beautiful.
If this is the crew we've got for the next several movies, then bring it on.
I'm in love.
As a life long Trekie, I LOVED it. I have been a fan of the original series, the Next Generation series and the movies. They got SO MUCH right! Some very emotional scenes, including the opening scene which had me in tears. When I saw Mission:Impossible III I thought it had a very ALIAS kind of feel to the film. With STAR TREK I felt it gave off that LOST vibe. Some of the music sounded identical to some themes on LOST but I think the flashbacks and the way time travel is incorporated made me think of LOST.Anyone else?
As much as I loved it, I have a couple questions.
****SPOILER ALERT*****
Is old Spock stuck in this new time line? History has been been changed. Spock,Scotty, and Kirk now know what the future holds for them. Vulcan is now destroyed and Spock's Mom is dead. Also, why was old SPock surprised to see Kirk on the ice planet? He had to know he could not have been expecting to find an older version of Spock, so why did Spock need to meld with him?I thought they would have had to change this time line and set things on course for things to played out. So, in this time line there are two Spocks. This is highly illogical!
I was hoping they would have fixed that before the movie ended. I guess they are leaving room open for a sequel.
Also, why was old SPock surprised to see Kirk on the ice planet? He had to know he could not have been expecting to find an older version of Spock, so why did Spock need to meld with him?
I'm not exactly following your question. Why would Spock EXPECT a young Kirk to suddenly show up? At this point he has no idea what to expect; who would ever think the young version of your best friend would show up on this god-forsaken rock you were left on?
Spock melded with him just to bring Kirk up to speed faster than explaining everything.
Clearly the reboot of the timeline allows for a plethora of new movies without having to worry about the canon of the original series/movies.
This is in response to Romantico, so SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER!
------------------------------------------------------------------
This movie used the idea of multiple realities, in other words, by going back in time and changing the events of the past Nero DID NOT change the events of HIS REALITY?S past, but a completely different past. This means that there is a reality (the one we have always followed) where Spock failed and Romulous was destroyed and Ambassador Spock is now gone.
The reality that Abram?s movie(s?) takes place in no longer has Vulcan as a planet and has both young and old Spock (though Old Spock is now working on building a Vulcan colony).
The reason Old Spock had no problem telling Kirk, Spock and Scotty the future is that IT IS NO LONGER THEIR FUTURE. It is the future of a different reality.
This is a brilliant way of having the crew of the Enterprise go on random missions that have nothing to do with the ?original? mythology, because we are now dealing with a different reality.
What is truly amazing is that the idea of parallel realities is very real. I studied it in my AstroBiology class. What it says is that if there is a break in the universe (scientists usually think it will be a wormhole, though a blackhole might work) someone could travel from one reality to another, and because of the lateral shifting of the universes (think of the movement of the tectonic plates) when they reached the other side they would be either in the past or in the future. This means someone could alter what happens in the past, but not be affected themselves (ie- not Back to the Future)
Abrams is working with very real theories here, which makes it use in the movie AWESOME.
Hopefully this makes sense.
Jacob, I see where you are coming from. Thanks.I know I am going to have to see it at least another time or two before I grasp everything.
I would have to see it again, but it looked like Older Spock was expecting Kirk. Also, do we know how long Spock was there? I heard 25 years but then later on it looked like he had just got there. There was a Starfleet base nearby, so had he been staying there?
Makes sense regarding the mind meld. That clears that up.
I read the comic novel STAR TREK: COUNTDOWN which is sort of a prequel to this new film and shows Nero's background and his relationship to Spock. I felt this was important to the story because it gave us a sense on how he turned into a bad guy and his history with Spock.

In the reality that we are used to Nero and Spock both went through the black hole, but Nero went in first, so he arrived in the new reality first. Because of the time distortions of the black hole this means he arrived in the new reality 25 years before Old Spock (remember the scene where Nero sees Spock?s ship come through the black hole and says ?I?ve been waiting 25 years??). He kidnaps Spock, puts him on the ice planet and then destroys Vulcan (in a relatively short period of time). I believe it was probably a period of hours that Spock was there, and he was too busy grieving over the loss of his home to worry about trekking to the base (a trip he makes once he melds with Kirk and realizes he can still save the federation in this different reality)

I know virtually nothing about Star Trek, save omnipresent cultural references like "Beam me up, Scotty" and the Spock hand thingy. I've seen maybe 2 episodes of original recipe Star Trek and 1 of TNG. Would I be totally lost if I saw this? I know JJ Abrams said this movie is good for non-fans as well, but all the reviews I've seen are from fans, or at least people more familiar than me.

I can't imagine you being lost. Especially since it's not only an origin story, it's an alternate reality origin story. You're not going to get the direct references, but they're all just throw away moments to make the fans happy and not necessarily woven into the structure of the film.
So, yeah. Can't say whether you'd like it, but I'd be really surprised if you were in any way lost.
