Oh My Goggy!

BWW, the Off-Topic Board and Star Wars, this is the greatest day ever..

Boy, as you all know I am a huge fan of the films and quite open about it..the films were and are a huge joy to me.

The "tinkering" GL has been doing with the OT is overall sad, but the DVD's are going to present the series to a vast number of new young people and that excites me.

There is also going to finally be some clean-up on the lightsaber effects regarding the Vader/Obi-Wan duel on The Death Star, a much needed polish.

Since the films became available on home video waaaaay back in the day,( yes they were "rental only" at first, of course I "bought" them by never returning them, I think Star Wars cost me two hundred dollars), there have been many different releases and versions, there were even subtle changes made for A New Hope's re-release in 79 for the big screen!

But Lucas is steadfast in his quest to have the films in a constant state of change...when Episode III- The Revenge of the Sith opens next Summer, look for a six film, mega archive edition, complete with all NEW scenes linking the saga..yes, it ain't over.

As far as the Prequel Trilogy goes, they have let me down a bit (hey, I liked Jar Jar!), BUT, they are still Star Wars and I'm looking forward to seeing the next one (which I think will deliver the goods), and sitting down one day with somebodies' grandchildren and introducing them to that galaxy far far away...and how a son's love saved and redeemed his father.

May the Force Be With You..Always.

Eddie, it's great that you love the films so much, but wouldn't you like to also show that somebodie's grandchild the film that you first fell in love with? Do you think they should go back and change the little things that didn't look so great in GONE WITH THE WIND? If they wanted to do it, fine. But at least give me the opportunity to remember what I loved so much about the original.

Sorry, but I feel VERY strongly about this.

I do agree with you Matt, I also have had the pre-special editions on DVD for years now, but as we discuss Lucas and his business skills I wouldn't doubt that ONE day will see them released to the public on some format. I have actually heard from some sources that it *will*....the big news is that there was word today that there might be Episodes 7-9 as either films or mini-series...hmmm, the Force is strong!

I've heard the same rumor, but Lucas is pretty insistant that he does not want those films shown again. He has been for years now. I have the originals on DVD also, but I wouldn't mind having official releases and the general public who wouldn't know how to acquire these would like them, also.

As for Episodes 7-9 I can't say I think we'll see those anytime soon. This past film didn't bring in nearly as much as they thought and they're expecting even less for the new one. That's why marketing is going to be so heavy in the months leading up to it's release. Everytime you turn on the TV or open a magazine or change your babies diaper, you're going to see an ad for it. Fox NEEDS this to hit big. Not just big. ENORMOUS.

There's a reason the last few Star Wars movies have been declining in box office profits. They're just not that great. And I really liked the original trilogy.

If you ask me, I don't really see the point in updating the films. You can update the special effects sequences all you want, the rest of the scenes still look like crap, it looks all spliced together and half and half. stupid.

Craig: I think the link between how pretty 1, 2, & 3 is and how torn up and rough 4, 5, & 6 is exactly what you said--the aftermath of the Clone Wars (we will see if this is true in 3) and the difference seen in our own country between Art Deco in the 30s and the way architecture became about efficiency over decor in the 70s.

I am not bothered by GL "finishing his films". I just think both versions should be released--preferably on the same disk.

I agree that GL does work the $$$ aspect of SW, but I think his updating of the films is genuinely artisticly motivated (whether successful or not).

I just read this thread. I can't believe they want to digitalize and update. They're classics!!! You can't erase the past! It's so, so wrong... I think I might cry. I am a closet Star Wars nut. Change is bad.

I HATE what George Lucas has done to those films. I mean...sure, go ahead and do it, but still give people the option to own the originals. I'm all for remastering, just cleaning stuff up, but all of the inserted CGI in the original trilogy is totally out of place or downright STUPID. (Greedo shot first? And missed at point-blank range? Yeah, okay, George. Whatever you say.) Add to the fact that the new movies are disasters (which mainly seem dependent on the atrocious screenwriting and directing by Lucas). I rather like how this webcomic describes it...

I am a huge Star Wars fan. I even wrote on it for a M.A. degree I received back in '97. I dont like what GL has done with the new versions of his original movies. Knowing that e-bay has the original movies in DVD form has given me something to go after.

The additions to the films largly did nothing to add quality or value to the story. So why did he do it? Just because he could? Hey, wasn't that Clinton's reason for playing with that cigar and Lewenski? Oh, well.

The new films and those annoying additions to the original movies all seem to be marketed to kids. That whole Ewok thing. As the movies progress choronologically they get more and more disney-like. Any body else feel that?

This is so tough for me because anything Star Wars excites me, I'm locked in at 9 years old emotionally becuase of them, no really I am, ask my ex's!

Please, I still buy the action figures!

The new DVD's will have some glimpses of Epi.3-ROTS, and it will be darker than anything we've seen so far, this one *might* redeem the last two, word is Tom Stoppard worked on the script with Lucas. Lot's of sad betrayal ahead for the characters.

Eddie, don't tease. You mean this one actually had a script?!?!
I guess PT.2 made more money than I thought if FOX fired the monkeys and replaced the typewriters with computers.

Will it document the demolition and bastardization of an American classic?

As a matter of fact, in many ways it will!

But for the most part the interviews with people like Carrie Fisher are worth the price of the dvd set, very interesting, she's always a hoot, but she is very insightful regarding the films and their effects on all of us fans.

I'm curious why Mr. Skywalker wasn't included in these. He'll do STAR WARS press for a nickel & a donut, but for some reason I don't believe he wished to participate here. Am I wrong?

Hamill was quite the looker in the first one, then the car accident...and his fall to the dark side was complete.
