Whale Rider hands down. It's message is so profound, it just breaks my heart everytime!

There have been soo many sad movies I've seen. Weirdly, those are my favorite kind of movies. I think the 3 that stand out are:
Beaches
Stepmom
A Walk to Remember
"The Yearling" kills me every time I see it.

I have to say I LOATHED "Pay It Forward;" For me, the saddest (and I am surprised no one has said it) is "Sophie's Choice."
the notebook, it did affect me while i was watching it, but after it was over i just sat and cried for atleast an hour and then i would be fine and i would think about it again and start crying
any disney movie where a parents dies. (ie: mufasa...bambis mom..)
oh, and pearl harbour too...i don't even know why...it wasn't even that good..:S

Love Is a Many Splendored Thing- William Holden, Jennifer Jones oldie
My Foolish Heart - Susan Hayward oldie
I'm with Jimm--"Sophie's Choice", and I'm shocked that there are other nominees.
(Although little Ricky Schroeder at the end of "The Champ" was a tear-jerker, and the final scene of "Gosford Park" took my breath away the first time I saw it.)
Dancer in the Dark
Requiem for a Dream
The House of Sand and Fog
Bent
Sophie's Choice
Schindler's List
Finding Neverland (I know, I know...)
As far as THE NOTEBOOK, I know that it's a notoriously sad movie - lots of people I know said it make them cry - but I didn't cry at all - I thought the ending was happy. They died together - that's what they wanted!
DANCER IN THE DARK. If you want gut-wrenchingly sad, see this movie. (And it's a MUSICAL! Kind of.) I've heard stories of tough football players bursting into tears upon watching the last scene.
Oddly enough, though, I didn't cry when I saw it; I was more horrified and disturbed than anything else. And incredibly impressed with Bjork's performance.
I didn't cry during the last scene either - I didn't actually CRY during the movie, I just got very choked up and teary eyed through most of it.
And Bjork's performance cannot be praised enough - this woman can ACT. She was just brilliant in this film and was utterly ROBBED of an Oscar nomination.

I cried almost the entire time during "I Am Sam." There are definitely movies that are sadder in terms of their endings and circumstances, but this is the movie that has made me the saddest, so I think that should count for something.
Hard to say - there are plenty of movies that have sad or touching moments that make me teary, but not too many that end with a sense of despair and hopelessness that leave me feeling depressed for a while afterwards. But "Requiem for a Dream", "Amistad", "American History X" and "Schindler's List" all did that for/to me.

Homeward Bound - it always makes me cry!!! I heard it over the phone once and started crying
Dancer in the Dark (I did not cry, I did not get choked up, I was just PISSED that I sat through a movie that depressing with absolutely no payoff. I will NEVER watch that film again!)
Requiem for a Dream
Schindler's List
Amistad
Terms of Endearment
The Sweet Hereafter
Angela's Ashes
Big Fish was incredibly sappy, not "sad". Whale Rider had one heartbreaking moment in it that absolutely moved me to tears (and that girl deserved the Oscar for that scene alone), but I wouldn't call it a sad movie at all.
I thought the ending was happy. They died together - that's what they wanted!
(possible spoilers)
I argee, the movie's not sad, per se. The reason why I cried was because... the movie follows them from their teenage years to their death bed. Regardless of all the problems that they faced (his drafting, her parents, her fiancee, her illness, etc.), they still ended up together.
PS - Bjork did deserve a nod.
21 grams or in america. both wonderfully sad movies.
I can't believe no one has mentioned "My Life Without Me" with Sarah Polley. Hands down one of THE most depressing films ever made.
Then again, it was very limited release, so maybe no one else saw it.
Glory. The final battle leaves my hysterical.
