Just as the local San Francisco papers and online websites, like ebar.com and edsgesanfrancisco.com, are reporting about the proposed Rainbow Honor Walk by the Merchants of Upper Market and Castro, I began to think why?
We are not Los Angeles and why do we have to copy their Hollywood Walk of Fame?
The idea might seem good in paper and even a noble suggestion of honoring our heroes but we already have the GLBT Historical Society for that.
Just think of the stretch of sidewalks that could be defaced by the tacky-looking rainbow flag mosaic and plaques that they propose to put in place. If the material is not sturdy enough, it will leave a messy crater on street that could definitely be an eyesore and a safety hazard just like at the stretch of sidewalk in Sutter Street in front of Hotel Diva with palm impressions from the likes of Jersey Boys and such.
The plaques will also have names of individuals who are not even Bay Area natives like Alexander the Great? Really? Just think of the manpower and resources that this will require and the money could definitely be used into better things like improving the services of the homeless people plying the Castro Street.

Mr. Lindauer posted a response that it is also for the education of all for the benefit of the Lgbt community.
If it's done right, it would be amazing but I am skeptical.
It's a good thing a discussion has already started out.

Maybe, it's just me.....but, why are you being so negative? How is honoring someone a bad thing?
The funding for this could come from private sources for all we know? And, what business is it of ours to question who's paying for it.
Do you really think that it project would be done wrong...with no "sturdy material" like you said?

Where exactly would this be? We have the Historical Society, and then Harvey Milk Plaza.
Saying Alexander the Great did a great thing for the LGBT community is a stretch, considering he's been dead for a couple of years. Gimme a break!
Maybe a better idea would have the Historical Society change its focus every month for a new person. And someone relevent, unlike Alexander the Great.

There's nothing wrong with honoring deserving individuals but in these tough economic times, it just sounded like it would be a white elephant project that could cost millions of dollars when around the block..there's a homeless lgbt that needs food, shelter, medications etc.
There are also other ways of honoring lgbt pioneers like naming streets, proclaiming holidays like the proposed Harvey Milk Day, putting up plaques on places of interest like the old dwelling place of Veteran Leonard Matlovitch, installation of the pink triangle monument every pride week, etc.
I am actually more of a proponent of putting the plaques on the outside walls of those establishment as to have more visibility and not on the pavement to be trampled on.

I wonder who did it first.
So what other places have it?
Vegas have one but I haven't seen it.
What are the other themes?

Maybe you can get with the City of SF with your ideas.
Was just in SF this past weekend. My all time favorite restaurant is 2223...on Market Street. The food is beyond perfect!

There's one in the St Louis Loop that honors famous St Louisians (Ike and Tina, etc).
Were the Tonys a rip-off of the Oscars (which came first) because they both hand out statuettes?
