I find the idea that anti-gay language in the state Legislature may have helped provoke this especially disturbing. After the Supreme Court first decided that Jehova's Witnesses in public schools weren't exempt from the Pledge of Allegiance, an epidemic of anti-Witness violence immediately began. And the Court didn't even use bigoted language in its writing. The decision was so reviled by many in the legal community and the country at large that it got reversed only 3 years later, which is insanely fast in Supreme Court terms. I doubt that we'll hvae such a sudden about-face in this case, but the precedent is promising.

But seriously, don't politicians get that they're setting an example? Or maybe they get it all too well.

The Republic Party stirred up hate and fear towards Gays and Lesbians to help win the election. Is anyone really surprised at the result?

(sigh) In my small midwestern hometown, people regularly stand on the corner outside Staples with huge signs that say "God Hates Fags." Gay-bashing is everywhere, sadly; and so little of what is most damaging ever makes the news.
