Wow, I saw 'Saved' last night and I loved it. It was very much like 'Welcome to the Dollhouse' or 'The Opposite of Sex', and is very much like an independent film. Well, I think it sort of is. I don't know. All I know is that it is wonderful.

Mandy Moore is really great in it, I've come to respect her a lot more as an actress. I think she is one of the more successfull 'singer-turned actresses'. The rest of the cast was really good, too, and the ridiculuous story was so much fun. It's crazy to think that there really are crazy Christians like the ones in 'Saved'.

Anyone else see it?

Joizey,
I grew up in a school and church like that. You don't even know. :)
I loved the movie. It's got musical potential, too.

I also grew up in that environment and though I normally don't agree with some of the media perspectives on evangelicalism this movie was spot on. Evangelicals need to see this movie also- but its doubtful many of them in the particularly conservative sectors will.

I loved it- many laugh out loud moments with a good message that a lot of people in this subculture need to hear. I read an interview with the creator and he said nothing in the film was made up- he experienced it as some point in his upbringing. I would venture to say he is not lying....

I saw this movie also. I thought it was good, not that great, but something that was a one-time watch. I thought Jena Malone did a great job but bedsides that there were really only two or three funny moments. Some of the dramtic parts were good and I thought they were the best part of the movie. I don't know about it, I think it had the potential to be a lot more than it was.

Just saw this today.

It was pleasant and I enjoyed the insights the different characters gained.

I think Mary-Louise Parker was fabulous as the mother. She has such a screen-prescence!

I have yet to see it (a little low on money at the moment), but I really can't wait. It's portraying my high school, essentially. And from my friends who have seen it, I gather that it's pretty darn accurate.

Bevan, you must get out. The men in my picture command it! Nobody should be subjected to a school like that.

Oh, I'm out (of the school). Graduated with the class of 2003 and am studying at Wright State now.

Seriously, my high school was rediculous. We weren't even allowed to have dances (like prom or homecoming) because apparently "dancing leads to sex". So instead we had homecoming banquet and junior/senior banquet. That's right, we got all dressed up... and ate.

Well dancing does lead to sex. It's in the bible.

That sounds a lot like what I did on prom night, though. My date and I went and ate out.

I loved Saved. I went to a school that wasn't as bad as that because it wasn't evangelical but I can tell you I thought the movie was excellent. It was really funny and I enjoyed the whole thing.

Of course I only went to see it for two reasons: 1. to see how it portrayed Christians and 2. because Patrick Fugit is gorgeous and I love him. With more emphasis on 2 of course re: 'Saved' - Yay!

And hang on, when did you win the discus?

i refuse to see it because i am ignorantly stubborn and i saw an interview with that stupid child actor with a long name and he was a total jerk. I like to base my opinions on little, usually inaccuarate information

I thought it was a great twist on the teen flick. I loved the exorcisim scene when Hillary Duff's character screams "I AM FULL OF CHRIST'S LOVE!", as she hurls the Bible at Mary, hitting her square in the back. To which, Mary picks it up and says, "You Idiot, this is not a weapon." Brilliant.

That truly was the best line in the entire film. Such a smartly written satire on these religious schools, or, hate camps that breed ignorance and intollerance.

Yeah, she's got a real future ahead of her. I first saw her in THE BANGER SISTERS and she really stood out. She has a real talent for that kind of humor.

She has her mother's eyes.

Matt,

I dont go to those schools but i do know those kinda people. Now, you said that these schools breed ignorance. The people i know are very knowlegable about the reasons not to support homosexuality. Their issues have to do with families and social structure. I wont state their case here because i dont know it as well as they do. (I myself try to stay from any offical stance on gays other than the religious stand point that its a sin to have sex with anyone other than your wife)
Now, are you grouping those who dont support homosexuality as "ignorant"?
Cause if you are, that seems pretty ignorant to me.

I love that movie. I've seen it twice and may see it again. Probably the kind of movie I'll get on DVD. It's just brilliant. Reminded me of Election - anyone see that?

Yes. You are FOR Civil Rights or you are AGAINST them. And if you are AGAINST them, you are ignorant. At best.

Give me a break, Bob. I'm not going to even justify that with an answer.

Funny how the terrorists, Nazis, and KKK use religion to justify their hatred, too. Nice company to be in.

now, now, jrb, that's a rather incoherent grouping. the nazis targetted the jews becasue they were jews, not because the nazis were especially religious. the "terrorists" is a bit of a blanket term since there are groups classified as "terrorists" that include but are not limited to maosists, marxists, environmentalists, communists, and the list goes on. so please be specific. now ya come closest on the klan. but even the klan, although they targetted catholics, commies (i include communism as a religion as it's merely a secular religion that worships the "state") and jews as well, their main focus was and is on race.

now, he's not necesarily hating anyone, just because he doesn't agree with the lifestyle. the pope doesn't condone homosexuality either. would you say he hates homosexuals? isn't it better to try to change someone's opinion rationally than to immediately demonize them and further entrench their opinions?

sorry, papa, I was just paraphrasing Aaron Brown on CNN. Therefore, many would argue my logic is fair. I could start a thread waxing eloquent on the blue sky, and you would argue to the death that the sky was bright orange and green.
