I loved the first one. It was original, interesting, and incredibly creepy. The acting was deplorable, but ALL horror movie acting is terrible. I'll definitly be seeing the second one.
ALL horror movie acting is terrible.
I wouldn't go that far. There have been many decent/very good performances in that genre. Even some excellent ones.
You're right, though. The acting is the worst part of it. I watched it again last night, and the performances (save that of Monica Potter and Makenzie Vega) seem to get worse and worse every time.

100 Greatest Horror Movie Performances
There's a decent one here and there, but for the most part, they're all pitiful.
When thinking of recent, good horror performances, few come to mind. The wife in the Amityville remake was quite good - but I don't know her name. Laura Linney was brilliant in Emily Rose, but I don't consider that to be a horror movie.
Melissa George was very good in Amityville '05, as was Ryan Reynolds (I thought). And Linney was outstanding in ...Emily Rose.
Some other ones come to mind...
Cecile de France, High Tension
Jennifer Connelly, Dark Water
Elisha Cuthbert, House of Wax
Kate Hudson, The Skeleton Key
Lindy Booth, Cry_Wolf
Dakota Fanning, Hide and Seek
Ariel Gade, Dark Water
Gena Rowlands, The Skeleton Key
Johnny Depp, Secret Window
Sarah Polley, Dawn of the Dead
Blanchard Ryan, Open Water
Crispin Glover, Willard
Desmond Harrington, Love Object
Jessica Biel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halle Berry, Gothika
Angela Bettis, May/The Toolbox Murders
R. Lee Ermey, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Sid Haig, House of 1000 Corpses
Jason Lee, Dreamcatcher
Sheri Moon, House of 1000 Corpses
Amanda Peet, Identity
Patricia Clarkson, Wendigo
Naomi Watts, The Ring
Matt O'Leary, Frailty
Gina Philips, Jeepers Creepers
Parker Posey, Scream 3
Johnny Depp, Sleepy Hollow

LOVED Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow, Secret Window and every other movie he's been in =), Sid Haig was so freakin creepy in House of 1000 Corpses and Sheri Moon with that laugh...soo creepy. I also wanted to add Cecile de France in High Tension, she was fantastic, a great actress
I saw it tonight.
*possible spoiler*
I'm deathly afraid of needles... I FREAK out when I have to get a shot, have to have someone in the room with me holding my hand. I can't even watch an injection without getting queasy. Sitting in the middle of the row through the needle scene was about the worst torture of my life, because I REALLY don't want to be "that girl" in the theatre who has to climb over everyone, but I was genuinely starting to panic.
I liked HIGH TENSION and thought it was wonderfully scary until the "twist" was revealed. That was enough to make it the WORST picture of the year, for me. It was pitiful. The star, however, was fine.
All the people you listed were fine - but better than average? I don't know...
AND...AH! IDENTITY! I forgot that existed until you just said that - I despised that movie. Same deal as HIGH TENSION. Same twist as well - come to think of it. Same as SECRET WINDOW. Just pitiful.
I thought Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands were pretty terrific in Skeleton Key, although it's not exactly a horror film.
Identity was already pretty stupid, but the ending made me throw my hands up in the air with frustration. Badly acted and that ENDING!!! Idiotic, random, abrupt, and made no sense. Thanks a lot, M. Night Shymalan, for popularizing the need for every horror movie to have a "shocking twist" at the end, no matter how asinine and illogical the twist is. (And thanks, as well, for never using a twist in your following movies that ever matched the cleverness of The Sixth Sense.)
Can't wait to see Saw II. Am going to re-watch Saw tonight on DVD. Has anyone watched the director's commetary? Is it worth a listen? I usually love that feature if I have time to use it.
