re: Scariest Bush Article Yet...

Lincoln quoted the Bible when he said "A house divided against itself shall not stand". You didn't see a million people screaming "separation of church and state" when he said that. I think those words from the Bible apply to America today.

The Bible is filled with wisdom that applies to all time and cultures, I think. But it's one thing to take advice from that book, and another to treat every single word of it as literal truth.

I don't object to anyone quoting the Bible. I do object to the implication that people without religion can't be moral, which usually goes hand in hand with the belief that only one branch of religion is truly moral.

Count me in as a believer in the Benjamin Franklin type of faith- I believe in an all-powerful God, and I believe that the best way to worship that God is to do good things for your fellow man. Simple. No doctrine, no dogma, no BS.

re: Scariest Bush Article Yet...

And it is the Religious Right Wing that is doing the dividing.

Gotham, I find it very scary that you approve of Bush making such major decsions based on religion. Mixing world politics and religion has always ended badly for humanity. That is why the Founders of the Country so clearly separated Church from State.

The reason Suskind, a Republican, referred to "one man's faith" is that the Republican Party, traditionally, was OPPOSED to the Federal government dictating what people should think. That independence of spirit was indeed the HALLMARK of Republicanism.

What's going on in the West Wing nowadays is very frightening. Thank you for reading the article. I'm sorry you feel the way you do. I fear such thinking will be lead to disaster.

I pray that Kerry wins.

Rodney said "Now Joey, don't ask me for my opinion then bash me for giving it."

That's exactly how I feel. You bait people into giving their opinion, then you stomp all over them for giving it.

Whoa, waitaminute...

Pal didn't "stomp" all over you. He was stating his opinion of your opinion. I didn't see anything inflammatory in what Pal said -- he didn't call you an idiot, he didn't say you were the spawn of Satan, etc. He did say that he found it "very scary" that you approve of Bush's decisions based on religion. Where's the insult in that? That's his opinion -- he sure didn't call you out on it.

He thanked you for giving a considered response. In a very civil way.

This goes RIGHT back to what I said in another thread: when did we reach a point when we couldn't discuss opposing political views in this country without someone crying "foul"?

true rlb,
and goth?It was our forefathers that set this country up w/a separation of church&state-why would you want to change the very tenet that this country was based on?

re: Scariest Bush Article Yet...

Sorry, Goth, I didn't bash you. I said your being okay with the circumstances described in that article frightens me.

It is my conviction, as deeply held as any of Bush's, that if George W. Bush is reelected, it will be the end of the United States as a world power.

"I would be very grateful if the Bush supporters on this board could read this article and respond."

When I said "You bait people into giving their opinion..." I was not referring specifically to PalJoey but to Democrats in general.

PalJoey asked for Bush supporters. Two have responded and all the rest is "stomping".

re: Scariest Bush Article Yet...

goth,
pal is being pretty logical in his discussion-you're reacting emotionally.
"stomping" would be like you calling a times article "garbage" or someone calling you a dimwitted christian fanatic....what the people on this board are trying to do is reason with you-don't make it personal...

re: Scariest Bush Article Yet...

I love the people on this board (and this is a bipartisan comment since I've seen both Democrats and Republicans do this...but more often, it's in regard the the 'awesomeness' of shows') who scream 'BUT IT'S MY OPINION. I HAVE A RIGHT TO IT. LEAVE ME ALONE.'

No.

You have a right to your opinion. And I have every right to absolutely HATE that opinion. And every right to tell you just how much I hate that opinion. I even reserve the right to judge someone based on the totality of opinions as expressed on this board.

You don't like it? I suggest then that you don't develop an opinion.
"I'm so looking forward to a time when all the Reagan Democrats are dead."

re: Scariest Bush Article Yet...

I suppose everyone here has the right to form their opinions and hang to them in the face of all arguments logical and otherwise, to be smugly self-satisfied with their viewpoints, and to never, ever change their minds.

I suppose that then I have the right to think a little less of those people.
