well, after the touching head resting scene, the storyline between the probie and his roommate has gone way downhill. the writers obviously do not know how to write for "gay" characters - not believably anyway. seriously, it is like a homophobic 12-year old writes this stuff.

I hear ya, RobbO. But it's probably because the two characters behave like homophobic twelve year olds.
Boring episode overall tonight.

I wouldnt say it was boring overall..... That portion of the story line was though.

I've been reading a few blog comments and essays on the controversial "rape" scene near the end of the June 20th episode. Thoughts?
I just caught up on the whole season last night when I couldn't sleep.
Didn't like the Tommy/Janet scene. I don't care if they used to be married or she ended up liking it; that was still rape. I don't really like Janet, so I'm not too torn up about it, but still, it was irresponsible for a TV show to be brushing it off like that.
That being said, I can't wait for Marisa Tomei and Tommy to screw with Johnny. He just really annoys me.
I feel so bad for Franco. I've never liked Susan Sarandon, so this doesn't really improve my opinion of her, even if it's just acting. It's just really twisted that someone would do that. He really should have fixed the custody situation years ago.
Probie and the roommate- I have to agree with whoever commented above; I think the homophobia is more about the nature of the characters than some bigotted opinion of the writers. Over the course of the series, it's quite obvious that Probie and many of the other characters have never been open-minded about homosexuality. So experimentation or even a full-fledged romantic fling isn't going to automatically turn them into a GLAAD poster child.

That's how I'm leaning, too. Although you can go into depth about the emotional struggle of both of the characters to rationalize it, the bottom line is I'm worried that a rape scene with the show's "protagonist" - particularly a rape scene where the woman then starts to "like it" - reinforces a dangerous myth that women secretly want to be ravaged and dominated. I'm disturbed by some comments I read on the Tivo forum by guys who say they found the scene hot! Whether you consider Tommy's actions rape or not, I don't think the writers or actors were hoping for it to be arousing!
okay, so are they trying to make us hate Probie's roomie?!?! what was that about?
and help me out, at the end i think it gave a "guest star" credit to Tatum O'Neill, which one is she? i don't know the character names well enough to look on websites. i'm assuming she is either the ex-wife of Dennis or the wannabe girlfriend to Dennis. There were no other large female roles last night, and Marisa Tomei was the "let's make our exes jealous" one...

Tatum O'Neill plays Tommy's sister. Garrity (Steven Pasquale, hilarious last night all doped up on the, er, "Ibuprofen") is dating her. He went over to her apartment last night and punched out someother guy she is screwing around with.
The other females are Janet (HATE!), Tommy's ex (played by Andrea Roth) Sheila (cousin Jimmy's widow and Tommy's ex girlfriend), played by Callie Thorpe. Susan Sarandon plays Alicia and Marisa Tomei is Tommy's ex sister-in-law.
Oh yeah, Probie's roomie is a dick. I have a feeling he's going to get all jealous and stalker-ish on the Probe.
Little Sister, thanks for the info. i forgot about Dennis' sister. What do we make of the comment during the weird "hockey" game to Probie of "what are you doing, being friendly, you want to date him?"...that with the whole Pasquale "breaking up" with Dennis is a weird context for Probie's current personal life.
i read the spoilers for this season and stopped watching after two shows when i learned the direction they were going with the probie's story line. they had something else planned, scraped it and then tried to salvage it - poorly if you ask me...
and where might one find these spoilers if so inclined?!?!?
i'm not really sure anymore where i read it...

okay, how many virtual rapes can one show have in one season?!?!? and is Dennis' manhood just going to wear off (according to the previews for next week)?!?!?
can the Probie be "cured"? I came in like fifteen minutes late last night and missed how Probie and Roomie ended up in the same straight bar....
And in all the sobbing after the drugged dinner and the molestation, was she saying in high school she waited so long for...WHO?!?!?...was that character name she was mumbling Dennis' brother?
Her dead husband, and Tommy Gavin's (Denis Leary) cousin. It is interesting how the show is getting back around to some of the 9/11 type of story lines that were absent. She is clearly a widow who has some serious issues. Some of these women are out there right now, still suffering.
It's a gritty show, but I love it.
Edited to fix brother to cousin... Tommy's brother is the crappy cop who's sleeping with his ex.
I generally like the acting but the storylines are getting so twisted. So backstory-wise, Dennis/Tommy has a brother who's a cop (currently living with Tommy's ex-wife) AND one who died in 9/11? why did I think the one who died (if that's the occasional ghost Tommy talks to) was a cousin?
You were right. The ghost, and the husband of the woman who drugged Tommy is his cousin.
